Chapter 14

Derek lost most of his Bellini relationships within a year.

Not because I ordered everyone to hate him.

Because once the alliance collapsed, his promises became worthless.

East clubs stayed Bellini.

Security appointments stayed merit-based.

The men he courted realized Whitfield access had always depended on marriage.

Without Evan, Derek had little to sell.

He called me vindictive.

I ignored him.

Then he called Evan.

My brother answered.

That surprised me.

Derek said:

“You could still have everything.”

Evan laughed.

“What everything?”

“Whitfield protection. Resources. Mara.”

Evan paused.

“Mara isn’t yours to offer.”

There it was.

Derek hung up.

Simple.

His worldview could not survive people refusing to act like assets.

Evan later told me he wished he had said that years earlier.

I reminded him:

“You didn’t know yet.”

He looked at his prosthetic.

Then at me.

“I knew something felt wrong.”

“Feeling wrong isn’t the same as knowing what to call it.”

He nodded.

That became important inside our family.

We started naming things more accurately.

Help was help only if refusal remained possible.

Tradition was tradition only if living people could reject it.

Loyalty was loyalty only if it survived disagreement.

Marriage was relationship.

Not access.

Disability was not weakness.

Need was not shame.

Simple definitions.

Apparently revolutionary.
