Chapter 12

Carlo lasted another six months before making his final mistake.

He approached Mara.

Not Evan.

He offered her a path back into Bellini.

Without marriage.

If she publicly confirmed that Evan had become emotionally unstable after the accident, Carlo could argue I overreacted to her behavior because I was protective.

Rewrite the gallery.

Turn abuser into caretaker.

Victim into fragile man.

Boss into irrational brother.

Elegant.

Mara recorded the conversation.

Then brought it to Evan.

Not me.

Another important distinction.

He listened once.

Then asked:

“Why bring this?”

She answered:

“Because last time I let someone turn your insecurity into my advantage.”

No tears.

No plea.

Just fact.

Evan gave the recording to me.

I summoned Carlo.

Played it.

His face did not change until the end.

Then he said:

“She misunderstood.”

I almost laughed.

The family phrase.

Always.

I asked:

“Did you ask her to describe Evan as unstable?”

“Yes.”

“Did you offer access in exchange?”

“I offered redemption.”

I leaned back.

“For whom?”

Silence.

Carlo genuinely believed he represented Bellini tradition.

That made him more dangerous than Derek.

Derek knew he wanted power.

Carlo called power duty.

I removed him completely.

No council.

No advisory role.

No private meetings with capos under my authority.

Personal wealth remained.

Family name remained.

Access did not.

He looked at me.

“Your father would be ashamed.”

I pressed play on the old cassette.

Dad’s voice filled the room.

“Carlo says rivals will see weakness. Carlo is wrong.”

My uncle went white.

He had never known the recording existed.

I stopped it.

“Do not use my father again.”

May you like

Carlo left without another word.

Sometimes the dead deserve one final correction.
