Chapter 13

Mara did not receive forgiveness because she exposed Carlo.

Important.

Evan thanked her.

Nothing more.

She accepted it.

That was the first thing she had done for him without demanding emotional payment afterward.

Months passed.

They spoke occasionally.

Then more.

I did not ask details.

Mostly.

I am still an older brother.

Eventually Evan told me:

“We’re trying friendship.”

I raised an eyebrow.

“That sounds dangerous.”

“So did engagement.”

Fair.

They met in public.

No Whitfield involvement.

No family business.

Mara started working outside her brother’s sphere.

Derek hated it.

Good.

She sold some jewelry he had given her and used the money to move into her own apartment.

I did not praise her.

Basic independence should not be treated like heroism.

Still, it mattered.

Evan watched behavior.

Not promises.

He had learned.

One afternoon they came to the estate together.

Mara stopped in the portrait gallery.

The pedestal remained empty.

She stared at the floor where the ring had rolled to my shoe.

Evan noticed.

“You okay?”

She nodded.

Then:

“No.”

Better.

She looked at him.

“I thought making you crawl would make you understand you needed me.”

He answered:

“It made me understand I didn’t know you.”

Silence.

Mara cried.

Evan did not comfort her automatically.

That was important too.

Compassion does not require rushing to erase someone’s guilt.

After a moment he handed her a tissue.

Choice.

Not reflex.

They left separately.

I watched from the doorway.

No engagement.

No promise.

Maybe never.

May you like

Good.

Relationships do better when no one is trying to turn them into infrastructure.
