Chapter 2

The heavy silk curtains framing the ballroom windows seemed to absorb the suffocating tension radiating from the head table as Liora approached. Her footsteps were virtually silent on the thick Persian rug, her slender, graceful proportions moving with a practiced, mechanical efficiency. She carried a small silver tray bearing a fresh porcelain cup of black coffee for the mafia boss.

"Ensure the boss's cup is refilled before the dessert course, Liora," the head butler murmured as she passed him, oblivious to the lethal drama unfolding in the shadows of the gala.

"I will take care of it," Liora whispered, her American accent trembling slightly beneath her breath.

Liora reached the head table. She stepped deliberately beside Cameron’s right shoulder, acutely aware of the dangerous man's proximity. The scent of his expensive cologne—a dark, intoxicating blend of cedar and spice—mingled with the aroma of the roasted meats and white roses. She carefully set the silver tray onto a nearby serving stand and retrieved the delicate porcelain cup.

She placed the cup flawlessly before Cameron. The presentation was immaculate. But as she began to turn away, the carefully constructed elegance of the evening shattered.

Estelle, who had been sitting calmly at Cameron's left shoulder, suddenly reached across the polished walnut table. Her manicured fingers, adorned with diamonds, darted toward Liora’s cinched waist. Before Liora could react, Estelle slipped her hand into the outer pocket of the housemaid's crisp white apron.

With a swift, triumphant motion, Estelle pulled her hand back. Dangling from her fingers, catching the brilliant golden light of the cascading chandeliers, was a heavy, sparkling diamond bracelet.

Estelle held the expensive piece of jewelry at chest height, ensuring every guest at the nearby tables could see it clearly.

"Found it," Estelle announced, her voice smooth and dripping with fabricated relief.

Liora froze. All the blood drained from her fair, rosy cheeks, leaving her looking fragile and terrified. She had no idea how the bracelet had gotten into her pocket. She stared at the diamonds swinging from the socialite's fingers, her heart hammering violently against her ribs.

Six-year-old Milo, sitting opposite his father, watched the interaction with puzzled attention. His small brows drew together in confusion, trying to process the scene unfolding before him.

Cameron, whose cold, perceptive eyes missed absolutely nothing in his domain, instantly noticed the heavy, sparkling jewelry and the sheer terror etched onto the housemaid's beautiful face. He looked from the bracelet dangling in his fiancée's hand to Liora’s pale features.

For a fraction of a second, a brief flicker of uncertainty crossed Cameron’s angular expression. The evidence was damning, and the implications of a servant stealing from his future bride were severe.

He slowly turned his head. He looked past his son and locked his gaze directly into Liora’s wide, frightened eyes.

"Liora. Did you take it?"

May you like

Cameron’s voice was deep, quiet, and incredibly deliberate. He spoke exclusively in questions, a chilling linguistic habit that demanded absolute truth. He allowed a measured, agonizing pause after her name. The sheer, commanding authority in his tone sliced through the ambient chatter of the ballroom like a straight razor.

The effect was instantaneous and absolute. Every single guest at the polished walnut tables stopped eating and speaking. Forks hovered motionless over fine porcelain. Crystal wine glasses were lowered slowly to the tables. The polite, affluent conversation died in their throats. Dozens of fair, rosy-cheeked faces turned toward the head of the room, watching the mafia boss direct his terrifying, unbroken focus onto the housemaid. The entire gala froze, suspended in a moment of terrifying, breathless anticipation.
