Chapter 16

At Emma’s fifth birthday, she asked for a piano performance.

Hers.

I almost asked whether she was sure.

Stopped myself.

She was.

The music room filled with family.

No grand stage.

No speeches.

Emma sat on the padded bench.

The same bench I had once shoved into the music rack during the confrontation.

Repaired.

Ordinary.

The fallboard remained safely raised.

She played seven notes.

Paused.

Forgot the next one.

Looked at me.

I smiled.

She started again.

Nobody corrected.

Then she reached the end.

Applause.

Emma hated the applause and hid her face.

Typical.

Afterward she climbed off the bench and closed the fallboard herself using both hands.

The safety support caught it gently.

She looked pleased.

“Done.”

My chest tightened.

Two years earlier, that piece of wood held her fingers while a woman told her silence was the price of safety.

Today Emma decided when the music ended.

No adult hand near hers.

No threat.

No secret.

Just a child finishing a song.

Renata stood beside me.

“Don’t cry.”

“I’m not.”

“You are.”

“Leave.”

She laughed.

Emma ran toward the cake.

No one made the moment bigger than she wanted.

May you like

Good.

Healing had finally become boring enough to belong to her.
