Chapter 14

Camille did not return for a year.

She wrote twice.

I answered neither letter.

Not out of cruelty.

Nothing required an answer.

Then Emma asked:

“Where Camille?”

Children revisit things after adults assume they are finished.

“She lives somewhere else.”

“Because piano?”

“Because of many choices.”

Emma thought.

“She sorry?”

“I think so.”

“Can sorry fix hand?”

“No.”

She looked at her fingers.

Fully healed now.

“Hand fixed.”

“Yes.”

“Then what sorry do?”

Good question.

I thought carefully.

“Sometimes it tells the truth about what happened.”

She frowned.

“That’s all?”

“Sometimes.”

She seemed disappointed.

Fair.

Adults teach children apology as magic.

It is not.

Later that week Emma asked to hear Camille’s letter.

I read the short one.

Camille apologized for hurting her.

For calling curiosity bad.

For trying to send her away.

For competing with Lucia.

For blaming Emma for hearing things adults chose to say nearby.

Emma listened.

Then:

“No visit.”

“Okay.”

That was all.

Camille did not push.

That mattered.

Months later, Emma changed her mind.

Ten minutes.

Garden.

I stayed.

Camille sat on the bench.

No engagement ring.

No jewelry beyond small earrings.

Emma stood six feet away.

“Why piano?”

Camille cried immediately.

Then stopped herself.

Answered.

“Because I was scared you would tell your dad the truth.”

Emma frowned.

“Should tell.”

“Yes.”

Good.

No manipulation.

No “I loved you.”

No request for forgiveness.

Emma nodded once.

Then ran toward the fountain.

Meeting over.

Camille looked at me.

I pointed toward the gate.

May you like

She left.

Respecting the end mattered more than tears.
