Chapter 15

The Bellucci security structure changed.

Not because Miles had been uniquely dangerous.

Because no one person should have held that much invisible control.

Three leads.

Separate duties.

Direct access to me.

No spouse, cousin, fiancée, or senior capo could override assignments casually.

But I stopped before turning the house into a fortress.

Emma still wandered into guard rooms.

Still stole pens.

Still asked whether radios could talk to the moon.

One guard actually tried to answer seriously.

Bad idea.

She asked seventeen follow-up questions.

Good.

Security around a child should feel like adults doing jobs.

Not a prison.

At council, I changed something harder.

Anyone could bring me bad information directly.

Not because hierarchy disappeared.

Because truth should not need perfect manners.

A young soldier once interrupted a dinner over something that turned out to be trivial.

Old me would have humiliated him.

Instead I said:

“Next time check with your captain first unless someone is in danger.”

Done.

No public destruction.

The sky remained up.

Interesting.

Miles had exploited my preference for filtered information.

Camille had exploited my preference for domestic calm.

Both weaknesses were mine before they became their tools.

I could admit that without sharing their guilt.

That distinction helped.

Emma came into my study one evening holding sheet music upside down.

“Daddy.”

“Yes?”

“I hear secret.”

My heart tightened automatically.

She grinned.

“Maria ate cake before dinner.”

I stared.

Then laughed.

“Devastating.”

“Tell?”

“I think we can protect her.”

Emma climbed into my chair.

May you like

No fear around the word secret anymore.

That mattered more than any council reform.
