Chapter 10

The atmosphere on the patio was thick with a deadly, suffocating finality. Emily held Ethan tightly, his face buried safely in her shoulder, shielding him from the impending doom of his abusers. The bright, cinematic lighting highlighted the absolute terror blooming on the faces of the traitors.
Emily slowly looked from Ryan’s bleeding, ruined face to Natalie’s panicked, bruised features.
"You thought my absence was a surrender," Emily said. She spoke slowly, with measured, controlled pauses. Her voice was dead calm, devoid of any rage, which made it infinitely more terrifying.
Ryan tried to speak, but his shattered jaw prevented anything more than a pathetic, wet gurgle. He stared up at his wife, his fair, rosy skin pale with the horrific realization that his reign was permanently over.
"You gave away his room," Emily continued, her cold eyes locking onto Natalie. "And you chained my son outside. Like a dog. While you slept in my bed."
Natalie froze entirely beneath the collapsed gifts, her breathing shallow, desperate to shrink away into the scattered tissue paper. She had wanted the power, but she had never anticipated the apocalyptic consequence of angering the true Boss.
"Now," Emily whispered, the words echoing clearly across the silent patio, sealing their fates with devastating certainty. "You two will lose everything, including your lives."
Ryan’s face became genuinely, profoundly frightened. The arrogant underboss finally understood that there would be no tribunal, no negotiation, and no mercy. He was a dead man.
Emily turned her attention to the circle of heavily armed bodyguards.
"Marcus," Emily commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority.
A towering, broad-shouldered capo stepped forward instantly, bowing his head in total submission. "Yes, Boss. We stand with you."
"Take them to the basement holding cells," Emily ordered, her gaze sweeping over the men. "Zip-tie them to the chairs. Do not give them food. Do not give them water. I will deal with them tonight after my son is safe."
"With pleasure, Boss," Marcus nodded, gesturing for the guards to move in.

The men swarmed forward, grabbing Ryan and Natalie roughly, dragging them screaming and bleeding from the beautiful, cinematic light of the patio into the dark depths of the estate.
Emily did not watch them go. She turned her back on the carnage, holding Ethan securely against her chest. She walked back into her home, the heavy glass doors closing behind her. She had reclaimed her empire, but the war to cleanse her family's name had only just begun. The true purge was coming.
