Chapter 6

The ringing silence in the hallway was broken only by the sharp, ragged intake of breath from Donatella as she desperately pushed herself upright. The bright video colors of the scattered belongings and the ruined moving boxes created a chaotic, surreal painting of total devastation. The cinematic light poured down, offering absolutely no shadows for the traitors to hide their humiliation.

Rocco, snapping out of his paralyzed shock, felt a sudden, reckless surge of adrenaline. The thirty-nine-year-old brother realized that if he did not assert himself now, his position in the syndicate would be permanently eradicated.

"Are you insane?!" Rocco shouted, stepping forward angrily, his American accent cracking with panic and faux-bravado. He clenched his fists at his sides, his tailored suit shifting as he puffed out his chest. "You strike our mother?! Over a bedroom?! You have lost your damn mind, Vittorio!"

Vittorio slowly turned his head. His cold, sharp eyes locked onto his younger brother. The terrifying, deeply masculine presence he projected was a suffocating weight.

"Keep your voice down," Vittorio commanded, his tone a lethal, vibrating hum that barely rose above a whisper. "You are frightening my daughter."

Rocco hesitated, the sheer intimidation of the Mafia boss forcing him to take a half-step backward. He looked down at his mother, offering her his hand to help her stand.

Donatella slapped his hand away. Her fair, rosy face was a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred. She pushed herself up from the floor, her elegant designer outfit wrinkled and covered in dust from the cardboard boxes. She touched her burning, swelling cheek, her eyes blazing with a venomous, aristocratic fury.

She had been humiliated in front of the staff and the soldiers. In her mind, the line had been crossed, and the only path forward was absolute, scorched-earth retaliation.

"You think you can rule this family without my blessing, Vittorio?" Donatella hissed, her voice shaking with rage as she straightened her posture. "You think you can operate in this city without the alliances I built with your father?"

"I operate this city because they fear me, Mother," Vittorio replied calmly. "Not because they remember you."

"We will see about that," Donatella spat, pointing a trembling finger directly at the five-year-old girl who was still hiding near her father's legs.

Donatella’s voice dropped into a dark, venomous register, delivering the ultimate political ultimatum designed to fracture the entire Mancini empire.

“Choose that girl,” Donatella threatened, the words dripping with malice, “and Rocco walks with the family. Half the capos in this city answer to him. If you do not apologize and allow this transition, we will split the syndicate today. You will be at war by midnight.”

Rocco stood taller beside his mother, his chest puffing out again as he embraced the threat. He believed the bluff. He believed that Vittorio, a pragmatic and calculating Boss, would never risk a massive, bloody civil war over a child's bedroom. He believed the business would always come first.
