Chapter 1

The afternoon sun poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of the Mancini estate, bathing the grand hallway in bright, vivid video colors. The natural, cinematic lighting was pristine and sharp, entirely devoid of any dull or yellow tint, casting flawless illumination over the opulent surroundings. It highlighted the fair, rosy skin of the family members who occupied the sprawling mansion, a stark contrast to the dark and treacherous business they operated. The Mancini family was a cornerstone of the American Mafia, their power absolute, their wealth immeasurable. But within the walls of their own home, a toxic and deeply deeply rooted ambition was beginning to rot the foundation of their empire.

Donatella Mancini stood at the end of the second-floor corridor, her posture rigid and demanding. At sixty-seven years old, the Mafia-family matriarch possessed a commanding, terrifying presence. She wore an elegant, custom-tailored designer outfit that spoke of old money and ruthless authority. Heavy pearl jewelry rested against her collarbone, and expensive diamond rings flashed on her fingers as she adjusted her posture. Her high heels clicked sharply against the imported hardwood floor, her fair, rosy complexion pulled tight into an expression of unyielding disapproval.

"The arrangements in this house are entirely unacceptable, Rocco," Donatella stated, her crisp American accent echoing down the long, brightly lit hallway. "You are thirty-nine years old. You are a senior operator in this syndicate. It is completely absurd that you are relegated to the guest wing while a child occupies the primary suite next to the master."

Rocco Mancini, standing beside her, offered a slow, arrogant smirk. He was thirty-nine, Vittorio’s younger brother, and he carried himself with an inflated sense of self-importance. Dressed in a sharply tailored suit with a heavy gold signet ring on his hand and a luxury wristwatch gleaming under the cinematic lights, he looked every bit the entitled underboss. His polished leather shoes tapped lightly against the floorboards.

"I completely agree, Mother," Rocco replied, his American accent smooth and dripping with entitlement. "I have men reporting to me daily. I need the space. I need the primary suite to conduct my affairs properly. But you know how Vittorio is. He coddles the girl. He places her above the actual business of this family."

"Vittorio has become soft since his wife passed," Donatella hissed, her eyes narrowing as she looked toward the closed white door of the primary suite. "He allows his sentiments to cloud his judgment. A five-year-old girl does not need a room the size of a penthouse. She needs to understand her place in this hierarchy."

"He won't be back from his meetings in Chicago until tomorrow evening," Rocco noted, gesturing to a stack of heavy cardboard moving boxes resting near the wall. "We have a narrow window to make the transition. Once my belongings are in that room, he won't have the audacity to force me out. It’s a matter of establishing dominance."

"Dominance is exactly what this family is lacking at the current moment," Donatella agreed, her voice turning cold and sharp. "Bring the staff up here immediately. We are moving the girl to the storage room at the end of the hall. It is perfectly adequate for a child."

"I'll have the bodyguards start bringing my boxes up from the study," Rocco said, turning to walk toward the staircase. "Make sure the maid clears out her toys. I don't want any of that childish garbage left in my new space."

"It will be handled, Rocco," Donatella promised, stepping closer to the white door. "By the time your brother returns, the new order of this household will be permanently established. It is time we reminded Vittorio who truly built this family."
