Chapter 4

The silence that followed Elodie's heartbreaking revelation was absolute and suffocating. The cinematic, flawless daylight illuminating the hallway seemed to sharpen every detail of the confrontation. The bright video colors of the elegant mansion felt like a grotesque mockery of the betrayal that had just been exposed.

Donatella slowly turned her head, her pearl jewelry shifting against her neck. When she saw her eldest son standing at the top of the staircase, a flicker of genuine shock crossed her fair, rosy face. She had not expected him for another twenty-four hours. Her meticulously timed coup had been shattered.

Rocco also turned, his arrogant smirk faltering for a fraction of a second before he quickly forced it back into place. He puffed out his chest, adjusting the lapels of his tailored suit, attempting to project a confidence he suddenly did not feel.

"Vittorio," Donatella said, quickly recovering her composure. Her American accent was smooth, attempting to bridge the massive, terrifying gap that had just opened between them. "You are home early. We were not expecting you until tomorrow evening."

"Clearly," Vittorio replied.

His voice was not a shout. It was incredibly low, a deeply resonant rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. The absolute lack of raised volume made his words infinitely more terrifying.

"We are simply making some necessary logistical adjustments to the household, brother," Rocco chimed in, stepping closer to the stacked moving boxes, trying to assert his claim on the territory. "I need the larger suite to handle the increased operational workload you’ve given me. The girl doesn't need all this space. It's a pragmatic decision."

Vittorio did not answer him. He did not look at Rocco. His cold, intimidating, Mafia-boss stare remained locked entirely on his mother.

Donatella calmly raised her manicured hand. She pointed her finger down the long, shadowed hallway toward the storage room, refusing to back down from the decision she had made.

"She is a child, Vittorio," Donatella stated, her voice dripping with cold, unyielding authority. "She will adapt. This family requires strength and proper hierarchy. You have allowed your sentiments to disrupt the order of this house for far too long."

Rocco smirked beside the boxes, emboldened by his mother's defiant stance. He truly believed that Vittorio would ultimately bow to the matriarch's wisdom, just as they all had done for decades.

Vittorio stood perfectly still at the top of the staircase. He looked at his crying daughter, and then he looked at the woman who had birthed him. The internal calculation was instantaneous and absolute. The line had been crossed.

With a slow, deliberate motion, Vittorio lowered his arm. He set his heavy leather travel bag down onto the carpet. The soft thud echoed loudly in the tense silence.

He began to walk.

There was no dialogue. The air grew incredibly heavy. Vittorio moved with a slow, predatory, and lethal grace. His polished leather shoes struck the floor with a measured rhythm. His tailored dark suit pulled taut across his broad, masculine shoulders. He bypassed Elodie, keeping his body between her and the threat, and walked directly toward his mother. The bodyguards standing nearby instinctively took a step back, their fair faces paling as they recognized the sheer, unadulterated violence radiating from the Boss.
