Chapter 9

The bright, airy lighting of the nursery cast a soft glow over the emotional reunion. Ella rocked her son gently, her tears falling onto the soft blankets. She pulled back the fabric just enough to check his tiny left wrist, and there, stark and undeniable, was the distinctive crescent-shaped birthmark. She let out a ragged, heartbroken sob of pure joy.
Beckett walked slowly into the room, his polished shoes silent on the plush carpet. He stopped beside Ella, looking down at his son. For the first time all evening, the cold, impenetrable mask of the mafia boss completely shattered. The high, angular lines of his face softened into a look of profound, agonizing love.
He reached out a large, tattooed finger. The infant stirred slightly, his tiny hand grasping blindly in the air until it wrapped securely around Beckett’s finger.
"Is he unharmed, Ella?" Beckett asked, his deep voice cracking with raw emotion.
"He is perfect," Ella whispered, smiling through her tears as she leaned into Beckett's strong, solid chest.
Beckett wrapped his broad arms around both of them, pulling Ella and the baby into a fierce, protective embrace. They stood there in the bright nursery, a fractured family finally made whole.
The woman who had purchased the child was huddled in the corner of the room, sobbing hysterically. "Please don't hurt us," she begged. "We just wanted a baby. Clarissa swore everything was legal. We didn't know he was stolen."
Beckett pulled back slightly, his dark eyes locking onto the terrified woman. The cold, calculating apex predator returned.
"You will never speak of this child, this night, or this transaction again," Beckett commanded, his voice dropping into a lethal, vibrating register. "If I hear a single whisper of my son's existence coming from this estate, I will return, and I will not leave a single stone standing. Do you understand?"
"Yes! Yes, I swear it!" the woman cried, nodding frantically.
"Then consider this your only warning," Beckett said, turning his broad shoulders away from her completely.
He placed his hand gently on the small of Ella’s back, guiding her out of the nursery and down the glass staircase. The extraction was complete, but the war with the Shaw syndicate was just beginning. Clarissa's father would undoubtedly retaliate once he discovered his daughter was locked in a basement cell.
As they walked out into the freezing courtyard, Vance approached, his face grim.
"Boss, the perimeter is secure, but we have chatter on the police scanners," Vance reported. "The neighbors heard the explosion at the gates. Local authorities are en route."
"Mount up," Beckett ordered, helping Ella carefully into the back of the armored SUV before climbing in beside her. "We return to the estate immediately. And prepare the men for a siege. The Shaw family won't wait for morning."
The convoy of black SUVs tore out of the ruined gates of the Sterling compound, leaving the shattered estate behind in the darkness. The drive back to the city was tense, the adrenaline of the rescue slowly fading into the harsh reality of the impending mafia war.
Inside the cabin, the warm golden glow of the dashboard lights illuminated Ella’s exhausted, beautiful face. She held her son tightly against her chest, her eyes heavy with sleep.

Beckett sat beside her, his tailored suit dusted with plaster from the breach, but his masculine presence was entirely undiminished. He reached across the seat, his large hand gently covering hers as she held the baby.
"We are going home, Ella," Beckett whispered softly, his thumb brushing across her knuckles.
