Chapter 1

The grand drawing room of the Vale mansion was a masterpiece of architectural wealth, entirely flooded with a bright, luminous, and warm golden light that held no trace of a muddy yellow cast. Towering crystal chandeliers hung suspended from the painted ceilings, casting brilliant, cinematic reflections across the polished marble floors. The room was a labyrinth of carved walnut furniture, plush velvet sofas, and heavy silk drapes that framed the tall winter windows. Mirrored walls multiplied the staggering opulence of the room, reflecting the magnificent Christmas tree that stood in the corner. The tree glowed with a dense, meticulous arrangement of warm fairy lights, heavy gold ornaments, and sweeping burgundy ribbons. It was a Christmas gift exchange meant for the absolute elite, and the room buzzed with the crisp American accents of fifty syndicate capos, wealthy donors, and polished staff.
At the edge of the room stood Beckett Vale, observing the crowd with the calculating eyes of an apex predator. At thirty-three, he possessed the rugged, undeniably masculine presence of a mafia boss. His broad shoulders effortlessly filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit. He had an angular face, naturally swept-back dark hair, and very short, meticulous stubble that framed his sharp jawline. A heavy family signet ring and a luxury wristwatch gleamed under the chandeliers. Intricate, artistic tattoos utilizing negative space decorated his hands and fingers with generous spacing, and a small, distinct artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.
"The holiday arrangements are absolutely flawless this year, Clarissa," a wealthy investor remarked, holding a crystal glass of bourbon.
"Thank you, Richard," Clarissa Shaw replied smoothly, her American accent dripping with practiced charm. "I believe Christmas should be a time of overwhelming beauty and generosity. We have so much to be thankful for."
At twenty-nine, Beckett’s fiancée was a vision of high-society perfection in a luxurious emerald satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her curves, her fair, rosy skin glowing beneath the lights. Dazzling diamond earrings swayed gently from her lobes. Her public manner was flawless, radiating a polished smile that effectively masked a cold, calculating ambition underneath.
"And how is the young heir enjoying his evening?" Richard asked, gesturing toward the center of the room.
"Oliver is simply thrilled," Clarissa lied seamlessly.
Moving through the periphery of the room, far removed from the laughter and the champagne, was Ella Hart. At twenty-five, the maid possessed a breathtaking, gentle beauty, but tonight, she looked like a ghost haunting the edges of the celebration. She wore a fitted black maid dress, but it was deeply creased. Her pristine white apron was rumpled, and her white ruffled maid headband sat slightly askew in her disheveled hair. Her fair, rosy skin was pale, and her expressive eyes were puffy and heavily shadowed from prolonged, agonizing crying.
"Ella," the head butler hissed sharply as she passed. "Stop lingering. The guests near the velvet sofas need their glasses collected."
"Yes, sir," Ella whispered, her voice cracking as she clutched a silver serving tray to her chest.
She moved with an exhausted, vulnerable manner, keeping her head bowed submissively. Three weeks ago, she had given birth in a sterile, private clinic. She had labored in agonizing pain, only for Clarissa to enter the room hours later with a cold, polished smile, delivering the devastating news that the baby had been stillborn. Ella had been forced back to work mere days later, her body aching and her heart completely shattered.
Six-year-old Oliver Vale, dressed impeccably in a charcoal suit and a burgundy bow tie, broke away from a group of relatives. He held a tiny red baby stocking in his small hands, his eyes scanning the room until he found the maid. Oliver adored Ella. He ran toward her, his small shoes tapping against the polished marble.
"Mommy Ella!" Oliver called out affectionately, throwing his arms around her waist as best as he could while holding the stocking.

"Oh, Oliver," Ella breathed, quickly setting the heavy silver serving tray down onto a carved walnut console table so she could gently stroke his hair. "You look so handsome tonight, sweetheart. But you shouldn't call me that when the guests are here."
"I don't care about the guests," Oliver said stubbornly, looking up at her with bright, innocent eyes. "I brought this for the baby."
