Chapter 3

The silence in the opulent drawing room was absolute and suffocating. The warm golden light cascading from the towering crystal chandeliers seemed to freeze in the air, highlighting the sudden, apocalyptic tension that had gripped the syndicate. Fifty of the most dangerous men and women in the city stared at the housemaid, paralyzed by the internal political hierarchy collapsing before their eyes.

Ella stood frozen, her delicate features pale with shock. She felt the crushing weight of fifty gazes, but the only eyes that mattered were the ones burning into hers. The secret she had carried, the quiet, stolen moments she had shared with the mafia boss in the dead of night, were no longer a secret.

She held Beckett’s gaze, refusing to look away despite the absolute terror racing through her veins. Tears gathered heavily along Ella’s lower eyelids, making her expressive eyes shine brilliantly in the golden light. She steadied a trembling breath, her chest rising and falling rapidly against her rumpled white apron.

"Yes," Ella whispered, the single word escaping through a small tremor in her breath, but carrying a devastating, undeniable truth.

A collective gasp erupted from the velvet sofas nearby. Murmurs of absolute shock rippled through the syndicate members. The woman destined to be the queen of the Vale syndicate had not only sold the boss's unborn child, but she had lied about its death to force the mother back into servitude.

"That is an outrageous lie!" Clarissa shouted, her polished facade completely shattering. "She is a lying whore trying to ruin our evening, Beckett! I have never touched a child!"

Beckett did not look at Clarissa. He stepped smoothly between Clarissa and Ella, an unmistakable declaration of absolute protection that stripped away Clarissa's authority in a single, fluid movement.

Oliver, oblivious to the lethal danger simmering in his father's broad shoulders, stepped forward. The six-year-old boy looked up at Beckett and offered him the empty, tiny red baby stocking.

Beckett looked down at his son. A profound, agonizing pain passed through his dark eyes as he realized the sheer magnitude of what had been stolen from him. He reached out with his tattooed hand and accepted the stocking silently. His fingers closed tightly around the cheap red fabric, a stark contrast to his luxury wristwatch.

Slowly, Beckett turned his head. His sharp jaw tightened slightly, the muscles ticking beneath his very short stubble. The cold, unyielding armor of the mafia boss slammed firmly into place. He held a cold, unwavering stare, locking Clarissa in a silent, terrifying promise of absolute retribution.

Under the weight of that stare, Clarissa’s smile completely disappeared. The emerald satin gown suddenly looked like a target rather than a symbol of power.

"Beckett, you must listen to reason," Clarissa pleaded, her voice trembling as she realized she was entirely isolated. "Even if this absurd story were true, you cannot possibly entertain the idea of acknowledging a bastard born to a servant! It would destroy your political alliances!"

"Are you attempting to dictate the politics of my bloodline, Clarissa?" Beckett asked, his voice a low, dangerous rumble that echoed off the mirrored walls.

"I am protecting your legacy!" Clarissa argued, stepping backward as Beckett took a slow, predatory step toward her. "A maid can't carry your heir! It is an insult to everything my family brings to this alliance! I found a wealthy couple on the coast. I provided a service that benefited everyone. You should be thanking me!"

"You sold my child," Beckett stated, his voice completely devoid of emotion.

"I solved a problem!" Clarissa shrieked, tears of frustration ruining her flawless makeup.

"Clear the room," Beckett commanded his enforcers, who were already moving to usher the panicked guests into the hallways. "No one leaves the estate until I give the order."
