Chapter 9

The stairwell was frigid, the scent of damp concrete and ozone filling the air. With every step down the metal flight of stairs, Claire felt the stitches in her lower abdomen burning like hot coals. Officer Marcus held her arm firmly, supporting half her weight as they descended deeper into the bowels of St. Jude's Memorial.

Below them, the hum of heavy industrial machinery grew louder. The sub-basement smelled of medical waste, bleach, and burning diesel fuel.

"Hold up," Marcus whispered, pressing his back against the cold concrete wall at the landing of Sub-Level 2. He drew his service weapon, clicking off the safety. "Look down there."

Through the wired glass window of the heavy service door, the dim basement hallway was illuminated only by yellow emergency bulbs. At the far end of the corridor, near the massive steel doors labeled INCINERATOR UNIT 1 - BIOHAZARD, stood a woman wearing a heavy yellow raincoat and black rubber boots.

In her arms was a small bundle wrapped in a blue hospital blanket.

Claire’s heart slammed against her ribs like a sledgehammer. June.

Beside the woman stood a man in dark medical scrubs, holding a large duffel bag. He was tapping frantically on a digital tablet.

"The system locked the loading dock gate!" the man hissed, his voice echoing up the concrete stairwell. "The Code Pink triggered the city perimeter protocol! We can't get the SUV through the barrier!"

"Then we burn the evidence and leave through the pedestrian storm drain!" the woman in the raincoat snapped back, her voice harsh and raspy. "We cannot leave a live child linked to the Mercer swap! If the police trace the DNA, the whole network unravels!"

"Is the furnace hot?" the man asked, glancing nervously toward the steel hatch.

"It's running at eight hundred degrees," she said coldly, stepping toward the iron furnace door. "Open the hatch."

Claire didn't wait. The agony in her abdomen vanished, swallowed whole by an explosive tidal wave of maternal rage.

"Stop!" Claire screamed, throwing the heavy stairwell door open with a thunderous bang that echoed through the cavernous basement like thunder.

The two figures spun around in shock. The man in scrubs dropped his tablet, reaching inside his jacket for a weapon, but Marcus was already stepping through the doorway.

"Police! Drop your weapon! Hands in the air!" Marcus roared, leveling his gun directly at the man's chest.

A single gunshot shattered the subterranean silence. Marcus grunted, his shoulder jerking backward as a bullet grazed his collarbone, knocking him against the concrete wall. The man in scrubs fired again, his shot ricocheting off the metal doorframe.

May you like

"Marcus!" Claire cried, dropping to the floor to avoid the gunfire.

The woman in the raincoat didn't hesitate. Seeing the confrontation turn violent, she turned back toward the roaring incinerator, pulling the iron handle of the combustion chamber downward with a metallic screech.
