Chapter 4

The shrill wail of the Code Pink alarm shook the maternity wing. Down the hallway, heavy magnetic security doors slammed shut with resounding metallic thuds, locking down every exit on the floor. Red emergency strobe lights cast rhythmic, bloody shadows across the walls of Room 412.
"Are you out of your mind?!" Luke roared at Camille, his face contorting into unbridled fury. "Turn that off! You're locking the entire hospital down! Turn it off right now!"
"Step away from the door, Mr. Mercer!" Camille commanded, unyielding. "The facility is under full lockdown. Security is already in the corridor."
"You don't understand what you've just done!" Luke screamed, running his hands through his hair, pacing the narrow space between the foot of the bed and the window. "You stupid, meddling bitch! You just signed my daughter's death warrant!"
Claire’s breath hitched in her throat, the world crashing down in an avalanche of terror. "What did you say?" she gasped, her hands shaking so violently she could barely hold Eli. "What did you just say, Luke?!"
Luke froze in the middle of the room, realizing what had just slipped past his lips. He spun around, staring at Claire with wild, bloodshot eyes. "Claire... no, listen to me..."
"You said 'my daughter's death warrant'!" Claire screamed, tears streaming down her pale face as she dragged herself forward on the mattress, her stitches screaming in protest. "Where is June?! Who has her?! What did you do to our baby?!"
"Mommy, don't move, you're bleeding!" Eli cried out, pointing at the small red stain blooming against the white linen near Claire's lower abdomen.
"I don't care about the bleeding!" Claire cried hysterically, her eyes locked on Luke. "Luke, look at me! Look at your wife! Where is our daughter?!"
Luke backed away until his shoulders hit the heavy glass window overlooking the hospital courtyard. His polished demeanor had completely dissolved; his expensive sweater was soaked with nervous sweat at the collar, and his chest heaved like a trapped animal. "Claire, please... you have to listen to me. If the police get involved, they will kill her. They told me that if there was any alarm, any siren, they would throw her into the river!"
"Who are 'they'?!" Claire begged, sobbing. "Who wanted our baby?!"
"It wasn't about our baby!" Luke whispered, dropping his voice to a frantic, ragged hiss. "It was about my debts! The firm... the offshore investments went bad six months ago. I owed four million dollars to men who don't negotiate, Claire! They found out you were pregnant. They came to my office last week and told me the debt would be wiped clean if I delivered a newborn girl with our medical profile!"
"You sold her?" Claire whispered, her voice barely audible over the screaming alarms. Her heart fractured into a thousand jagged pieces. "You traded our child... for a debt?"
"No! They promised she wouldn't be hurt!" Luke pleaded, tears finally spilling from his own eyes. "They said an elite family overseas wanted a private adoption without paper trails! They said she would live in a mansion! I was going to fix it later! I was going to find a way to get her back!"

"You traded your own flesh and blood!" Camille shouted in disgust, stepping closer to the bed to shield Claire and Eli. "You disgust me!"
At that moment, the heavy metal door handle rattled violently from the outside.
