Chapter 1

The fluorescent ceiling lights of Room 412 hummed with a sterile, clinical precision. Claire Mercer leaned back against the elevated hospital pillows, her breath catching in her throat with every minute shift. Her pale, rosy cheeks were flushed with a feverish exhaustion following the emergency C-section, and the clear IV line taped to the back of her left hand pulled taut as she adjusted her hospital gown. On the side table, her plastic patient wristband rested against the cool metal rail. She was fragile, drained of blood and strength, but her maternal instinct was buzzing like an electric wire.

In the center of the room, Luke Mercer was wheeling the clear acrylic bassinet forward. He was dressed in a slate-gray cashmere sweater and tailored trousers, his gold wedding band glinting under the lights. His handsome face was usually a mask of calm, but tonight, his jaw was clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath the skin.

"Luke, let me hold her," Claire said softly, extending a trembling arm. "Bring her closer. Please."

Before Luke could push the cart another inch, five-year-old Eli dashed across the linoleum floor. Wearing his long-sleeve blue shirt, faded jeans, and scuffed sneakers, the boy threw his small frame directly in front of the bassinet's rubber wheels. His hands were spread wide, blocking the path, his small sneakers skidding on the waxed tiles.

"Eli, what are you doing?" Luke snapped, his tone dangerously low. "Move out of the way. Your mother needs to see the baby."

"No!" Eli screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched sob. "Don't touch that bed! Don't let him push it!"

"Eli, honey, come here," Claire urged, alarmed by the raw panic in her son's eyes. "What's wrong? Why are you shouting?"

Luke reached down, his fingers sinking hard into the boy’s shoulders, trying to wrench him backward toward the corner. "That's enough, Eli. You're behaving like a spoiled brat. Step aside right now!"

"Let go of me!" Eli thrashed violently, tearing his small shoulders from his father's grip. He lunged back toward the bassinet, pointing an accusing, trembling finger through the clear plastic at the sleeping newborn wrapped in pink fleece. His eyes were wide, wild with terror, exploding with desperate certainty. "That's not your sister—Dad... swapped the babies!"

The words hit the room like a detonated charge.

"What?" Claire whispered, her hand freezing in mid-air. "Eli, what did you just say?"

"I said he swapped her!" Eli cried, hot tears spilling down his reddened cheeks. "That's not June! He traded her!"

Luke’s face darkened instantly. "Shut your mouth!"

Without hesitation, Luke lunged forward, grabbed Eli by the collar of his shirt, and forced him back two steps. With a sharp, violent flick of his wrist, his open palm struck Eli across the face. The slap cracked through the room like a gunshot. Eli staggered backward, lost his footing on the slick floor, and crashed hard onto the tiles, crying out in pain as his hip hit the metal base of Claire's bed.

Claire gasped, her voice tearing from her throat. "Luke! Did you just hit our son?! Are you out of your mind?!"

Luke stood over the boy, his chest heaving, his tie crooked, his jaw tight and vibrating with furious dismissal. "The kid is acting out of jealousy and fabricating lies! He doesn't want another child in this family, Claire, and he's making up insane stories to get attention!"
