Chapter 22

The transition of the estate was profound. Elena was no longer simply Lily’s guardian; she had become the undeniable heart of the household. Her calm, intuitive nature softened the dark edges of the criminal empire, providing a necessary, brilliant light in a world built on shadows.

It was a Sunday afternoon. The sprawling, manicured lawns were bathed in pristine, vivid sunlight. Dominic stood on the stone patio, his suit jacket discarded, watching Lily practice riding a small bicycle on the paved driveway.

Elena sat nearby on a plush outdoor sofa, smiling warmly as she encouraged the little girl.

"Look, Daddy! I'm doing it!" Lily cheered, pedaling furiously.

"You are flying, little bird," Dominic called back, a rare, genuine smile transforming his movie-star handsome face.

He turned his attention back to Elena. The cinematic light caught the subtle flush on her fair, rosy cheeks. The magnetic, intense pull between them had grown undeniable, a quiet storm building behind the formal boundaries of their arrangement.

"She is thriving," Dominic stated softly, walking over to sit beside Elena. He kept a respectful distance, but the sheer physical power he radiated was overwhelming.

"She is resilient," Elena corrected gently, turning to look at him. "She just needed to know she was safe."

"You made her feel safe, Elena," Dominic whispered, his deep, raspy voice dropping into a register of profound intimacy. "You made this house feel like a home."

Elena’s breath hitched. She looked into his cold, intimidating eyes, finding them burning with a fierce, protective devotion. "I didn't do it alone, Dominic."

Before he could respond, Silas stepped out onto the patio, his face grim. The brief moment of domestic peace was instantly shattered.

"Boss," Silas said, keeping his voice low. "We have a situation at the northern border. The Montreal syndicate is moving in."
