Chapter 9

The room descended into a chaotic buzz as the relatives finally broke their silence, turning on Eleanor and Richard. Cousins and aunts who had previously bowed to Eleanor's wealth were now openly condemning her, backing away as if the matriarch had a contagious disease.

Richard let out a pathetic, whiny groan, burying his face in his hands as his social and financial life evaporated before his eyes. Eleanor stood trembling by the ruined table, completely ostracized, the bright red handprint on her face a glaring mark of her failure.

Victoria turned away from them. She knelt down, the sapphire silk of her dress pooling on the floor, and pulled Lily into a tight, fierce embrace.

"It's over, darling," Victoria whispered into her daughter’s hair. "They are never going to hurt you again. I promise you."

Lily sniffled, wrapping her small arms around Victoria’s neck. "Can we go home, Mommy?"

"Yes, baby. We're going home right now," Victoria said, lifting the child into her arms as she stood up.

She turned toward the grand exit, ready to walk out of the toxic family forever. The guests parted for her, clearing a path of respect for the woman who had just single-handedly dismantled the corrupt matriarchy of their social circle.

"Victoria, please!" Eleanor called out, her voice cracking with a desperate, pathetic plea. "Don't press charges. It will ruin us in the press! We can make an arrangement!"

Victoria didn't even turn around. "Enjoy the kitchen, Eleanor," she called over her shoulder.

As she neared the heavy double doors, Marcus fell into step beside her. The Security Manager reached out and gently pushed one of the doors open for her, his professional demeanor flawless.

"Thank you, Marcus," Victoria said genuinely, looking at the rugged man. "You saved us a lot of trouble tonight."

"Just doing my job, ma'am," Marcus replied softly.

But as Victoria stepped through the doorway into the quiet, carpeted hallway of the venue, Marcus’s radio cracked to life with a sharp burst of static. The burly man pressed a finger to his earpiece, his brow furrowing deeply. The professional neutrality on his face slipped, replaced by a sudden, intense concentration.

"Repeat that, Control," Marcus said quietly into his lapel microphone.

Victoria paused, a sudden chill tracing its way down her spine. "Is something wrong?"
