Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the grand ballroom cast a fractured, prismatic light over the wedding banquet, illuminating a sea of white American elites in their finest evening wear. Victoria sat near the head table, the deep sapphire silk of her formal gown pooling perfectly around her heels. At thirty-eight, she possessed a striking, effortless beauty, her fair, rosy skin complemented by the diamonds glittering at her ears and wrist. Yet, despite the opulent surroundings and the cheerful clinking of champagne flutes, a cold knot of dread sat heavily in her stomach.
"She is chewing far too loudly, Victoria," a voice murmured from her left.
Victoria didn't need to look to know it was Eleanor. Her mother-in-law, a rigid sixty-eight-year-old matriarch wrapped in an emerald skirt suit and heavy pearls, sat with a posture that could cut glass.
"She is a six-year-old eating her dinner, Eleanor," Victoria replied, her tone perfectly measured, keeping her eyes fixed on her smartphone. "Let Lily be."
"I am merely stating that proper breeding shows early," Eleanor sneered, taking a delicate sip of her wine. "But of course, one can only expect so much given her… origins."
Victoria’s knuckles turned white around her phone. "Do not start this tonight, Eleanor. Not here. Lily is your granddaughter, whether you approve of the adoption or not."
"Blood is blood, my dear. Ink on paper does not rewrite genetics," Eleanor retorted, her voice dropping to a venomous whisper.
Across the table, little Lily sat in her blush-pink flower-girl dress, oblivious to the verbal daggers being thrown over her head. Her small feet, clad in white flats, dangled inches above the polished marble floor. She hummed happily, pushing a piece of roasted chicken across her porcelain plate.
"Look at her," Richard, Victoria’s thirty-six-year-old brother-in-law, chimed in. He adjusted his silk bow tie, the bright coral boutonniere on his tuxedo standing out sharply against the black lapel. "She doesn't even know which fork to use. It’s embarrassing, Victoria. We have senators at the next table."
"Richard, if you spend half as much time worrying about your own failing investments as you do my daughter’s silverware, you wouldn't need to ask my husband for loans," Victoria fired back, her voice deadly calm.
Richard’s fair face flushed an angry, mottled pink. He opened his mouth to retort, but Eleanor suddenly stood up, smoothing her skirt.
"I have had quite enough of this insolence," Eleanor hissed.
Before Victoria could even register the older woman’s movement, Eleanor took two swift steps around the table. With a shocking, brutal display of force, the matriarch raised her low-heeled shoe and violently kicked the back of Lily’s chair.
The heavy mahogany legs shrieked against the marble. The chair shot backward with terrifying speed. Lily’s small hands flew up, but there was nothing to grab. She tipped backward, crashing hard onto the unforgiving stone floor. Her porcelain plate slipped from the table, shattering into dozens of razor-sharp fragments inches from the little girl’s face. Lily immediately curled inward, pulling her knees to her chest in absolute, paralyzing shock.

The entire banquet hall fell dead silent. The string quartet missed a note. Dozens of guests turned, their faces slack with horror.
Eleanor stood over the trembling child, her wrinkled face devoid of any humanity. "Adopted children eat in the kitchen," she announced, her voice cold and viciously humiliating, echoing off the vaulted ceilings.
