Chapter 8

"Why?" Victoria’s voice cut through the murmurs of the disgusted guests. The single word hung in the air, heavy with a dangerous, demanding weight.

Richard couldn't meet her eyes. He stared at the marble floor, his breathing shallow and rapid. Eleanor, stripped of her aristocratic armor, leaned heavily against the table, her face buried in her hands as the reality of her social ruin set in.

"I asked you a question, Richard," Victoria said, stepping closer. "Why would you go to such elaborate lengths to frame a six-year-old child for a petty theft? You didn't just do this because you dislike her. You did this to build a record."

Richard flinched. The subtle twitch in his jaw gave him away.

"That's it, isn't it?" Victoria continued, her mind connecting the final, darkest dots of the conspiracy. "My husband’s trust fund unlocks next month. The bylaws state that the primary estate transfers to his legal heirs. You and Eleanor have been trying to convince the board that Lily shouldn't count as a legal heir because she's adopted."

"She isn't blood!" Eleanor suddenly shrieked, lifting her tear-streaked face. "The estate belongs to the bloodline! We couldn't let some random orphan inherit what my grandfather built! If she had a criminal record, if we could prove she was morally defective, the lawyers said we could challenge the adoption in probate court!"

The collective gasp from the wedding guests was deafening. Even Richard looked at his mother in horror, realizing she had just confessed to the entire scheme in front of a room full of witnesses.

"You tried to traumatize my daughter to steal her inheritance," Victoria whispered, the sheer depravity of the act settling into her bones.

"It’s our money, Victoria!" Richard yelled, his panic turning into defensive desperation. "You have no idea how much debt I’m in! If your husband gets the primary estate, I lose everything! I lose the house, the cars, everything!"

"So you decided to destroy a little girl," Victoria said, shaking her head slowly. She looked at the two of them, no longer seeing family, but seeing only parasites. "You are vile, hollow, miserable people."

She turned back to Marcus, who was standing quietly, observing the fallout with a stoic expression.

"I want the police here immediately," Victoria told the Security Manager. "And I want a copy of that video sent to my attorney."

"Already done, ma'am," Marcus nodded respectfully. "My team is holding the front doors. No one leaves until the authorities arrive."
