Chapter 5

The second cassette explained Gabriel’s death.

Not murder.

That mattered.

No secret assassin.

No dramatic execution.

Gabriel discovered Silas had been paying three Whitlock associates for information.

Meeting schedules.

Route changes.

Family arguments.

Nothing that would destroy us individually.

Enough to map weaknesses.

Gabriel confronted Silas at Lake Mercer.

Silas denied it.

Then threatened something more personal.

He told Gabriel that if Whitlock refused the alliance, he would make sure our own family blamed Gabriel when the next route war started.

Divide brothers.

Isolate him.

Turn disagreement into betrayal.

Gabriel left the house furious.

Hours later, his car left an icy road.

Accident.

Nothing more proven.

Silas did not kill him.

But Gabriel died believing a betrayal campaign had already begun.

That distinction mattered.

Preston listened quietly.

Then asked:

“Why did everyone say Uncle Gabriel wanted Dad removed?”

Rafe looked at him.

“Who told you that?”

“Silas.”

Of course.

Gabriel’s third cassette destroyed that lie.

“My brother should lead if I don’t.”

I stopped breathing.

Gabriel continued.

“Marcus is less charming than I am.”

Harper almost laughed through tears.

Typical Gabriel.

“He’s also harder to buy.”

I closed my eyes.

“He will hate compromise until he learns which compromises preserve people instead of pride.”

Then:

“But if anyone tells his son I wanted a different successor, they’re lying.”

Preston broke.

Not loudly.

His face simply folded.

Silas had built his resentment around a dead man’s blessing that never existed.

I let him sit with it.

Then Harper asked:

“What did Mom find?”

Good question.

Gabriel’s tapes were nine years old.

Evelyn came here six months before her death.

Something newer had brought her back.

The answer sat in the final envelope.

Three recent photographs.

Preston.

Lydia.

And Silas Vale.

At Lake Mercer.

Taken eleven months ago.

Before Preston ever told me he was serious about marrying her.

My wife had caught them meeting in secret.
