Chapter 10

Silas lost access to every Whitlock property that day.

No war.

No dramatic punishment.

I cut routes we shared.

Ended private club privileges.

Removed Vale men from Whitlock events.

Any business that required trust stopped.

Lydia was different.

She asked to speak with Preston alone.

He refused.

That surprised me.

Good.

He said:

“I don’t know which parts of us were real.”

Lydia cried.

“I do.”

“That’s the problem.”

He understood now.

She might genuinely love him.

But she had also lied long enough that he could not tell where strategy ended and love began.

There is no quick repair for that.

Harper refused to speak with him too.

Also fair.

Preston turned toward me.

“What happens to me?”

I thought.

He wanted punishment.

Because punishment is easier than uncertainty.

“You lose every Whitlock role.”

His face hardened.

“For how long?”

“I don’t know.”

He laughed bitterly.

“Convenient.”

“No.”

I stepped closer.

“You assaulted your sister’s dignity at your mother’s memorial and worked with another family to undermine this one.”

His eyes filled.

“You don’t get a schedule for when people trust you again.”

That landed.

His personal money remained.

His home remained.

His surname remained.

What he lost was access.

Decision rooms.

Crews.

Representation.

No one would call him “future boss” because he was my son.

He never should have been called that anyway.

Harper looked at me.

That mattered too.

I had allowed people to treat Preston as obvious successor because he was male and older.

Even while never formally promising him anything.

Silence again.

Creating assumptions I later blamed him for believing.

I addressed the family the next evening.

No automatic heir.

No son inherits by proximity.

No daughter excluded by habit.

Future leadership would be earned by adults already capable of carrying it.

Not promised to children.

Not whispered at engagement dinners.

Not decided by dead brothers or living fathers.

Preston listened from outside the room.

He had no seat.

May you like

For now.

That was consequence.
