Chapter 12

Preston found work outside Whitlock.

Not a leadership role.

A logistics company owned by an old friend who owed me nothing.

Important.

I did not arrange it.

He did.

Months passed.

No calls asking for reinstatement.

No dramatic apologies.

Then one letter arrived for Harper.

She brought it to me unopened.

“What do I do?”

“Your choice.”

“I hate that answer.”

“I know.”

She laughed despite herself.

Then opened it.

Preston wrote three pages.

Too many.

Harper stopped halfway.

“He keeps explaining.”

“Probably trying to make guilt sound organized.”

She nodded.

At the end, one sentence changed her expression.

I believed Silas because every time I felt small, I wanted someone else to be responsible.

Harper reread it.

“That’s the first honest thing.”

Maybe.

She did not reply.

Not yet.

Preston later wrote me.

Shorter.

He apologized for searching Evelyn’s room.

For believing Gabriel wanted me removed.

For allowing Lydia to mock Harper.

For overturning the urn.

The last one stood alone.

I had no defense for that.

Good.

I called him.

Not to forgive.

To acknowledge.

“You sound different.”

“So do you.”

Fair.

He asked about the key.

I had kept it.

“Did you destroy the Quiet Room?”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because Gabriel built it.”

Then:

“But I’m not worshiping it either.”

The tapes were copied.

Shared with Harper.

Originals stored.

No one person would control that history again.

The brass key no longer carried mystery.

May you like

Just access.

Objects shrink when truth catches up to them.
