Chapter 7

Evelyn remained convinced I was overreacting.

That interested me.

She invited me to lunch two weeks later.

I went.

Why?

Because I wanted to understand the system that produced the plan.

She told me about her own marriage.

Her husband had two sons from before.

When she entered the Vale household, the boys were sent to boarding school for a term.

“Just while everyone adjusted.”

There it was.

History.

Evelyn loved them later.

Still.

But she learned a rule.

New marriages need empty space before old attachments return.

She called it wisdom.

I called it displacement.

She disagreed.

Then I asked:

“How did the boys feel?”

Silence.

She had never asked.

Forty years.

May you like

Never asked.

That was the entire problem.
