Chapter 6

The engagement ended that night.

No discussion.

No pause.

I removed my ring.

Placed it beside hers.

Corisandra looked devastated.

“I love you.”

“I know.”

That made it harder.

“I never wanted to hurt her.”

“You put her in a trunk.”

She broke.

“I thought she’d be inside for one minute.”

“She thought she was being taken away.”

Silence.

Intent had reached its limit.

I continued.

“You did not need to hate Nessa to hurt her.”

She whispered:

“I wanted us.”

“So did I.”

That was true.

“But I never agreed that us required less of her.”

There.

Relationship over.

Not because Corisandra was evil.

May you like

Because her vision of marriage required my daughter to shrink.

Mine did not.
