Chapter 2

The deafening crash of crystal and silver silenced the nearby guests. The bright, cinematic lighting seemed to freeze the moment in terrifying clarity. Emma gasped as her spine collided with the edge of the reception table, the breath knocked out of her lungs.

Dominic didn't even look at the woman he had just assaulted. His bloodshot, furious eyes snapped directly down to the three-year-old boy. With a sudden, aggressive motion, Dominic raised one heavy hand high into the air, aiming it downward toward Leo.

Before Dominic’s hand even came close to making contact, Leo let out a sharp, terrified gasp. The little boy instantly threw his tiny hands over his head, curling his body into a tight, defensive crouch directly behind Emma’s legs. He braced for an impact he had clearly felt before.

"See?" Dominic roared furiously, gesturing wildly at the cowering child. His voice echoed across the silent room. "The maid taught him to fear me! She's poisoning his mind against his own blood!"

Less than ten feet away, Vincent Moretti had been deep in conversation. The sound of the shattering glass made him turn, but the sight of his son cowering in absolute terror sent a surge of lethal adrenaline through his veins.

Vincent moved with explosive, terrifying speed.

He crossed the polished marble floor in three massive strides. He didn't speak. He didn't shout. He simply reached out and clamped his powerful, masculine hands onto Dominic’s tailored shoulders. With a sheer display of veteran strength, Vincent immediately tore Dominic away from Emma, hurling his cousin back a full step.

Without pausing, Vincent reached down and pulled Leo safely into his arms, pressing the small boy against his chest.

"Daddy…." Leo cried, sobbing openly through his tears. He buried his rosy face into his father's expensive dress shirt, speaking between ragged, terrified hiccups. "Daddy, please…."

"I have you, Leo. I have you," Vincent murmured, his deep voice a soothing, protective rumble. He held his son tightly, shielding him from the rest of the room.

Emma slowly pushed herself up from the edge of the reception table. Her back throbbed with pain, but her fair, rosy face was set in a mask of absolute, unyielding determination. She smoothed her apron and looked directly into Vincent’s cold, sharp eyes. Her voice was shaking, but the truth in her words cut through the silence like a scalpel.

"He reacted before Dominic even touched him," Emma said, her American accent ringing out clearly for all the surrounding capos and bodyguards to hear. "He knew what was coming, Mr. Moretti."

Vincent’s expression became completely still. The realization hit him with the force of a freight train. A child does not preemptively cower from a raised hand unless that hand has struck him before.

The color drained entirely from Dominic’s face. The drunken rage evaporated, replaced instantly by the cold, creeping dread of a man who realized he had just crossed an unforgivable line. He looked at the dead, expressionless face of the Mafia Boss and began backing away, his polished leather shoes slipping slightly on the spilled champagne.

"Vincent, she's lying," Dominic stammered, holding his hands up defensively. "The girl is a liar. I was just trying to discipline the boy for crying in public."

But Vincent remained perfectly still, the terrifying silence radiating from his powerful frame.

Driven by a sudden, desperate panic, Dominic decided that eliminating the accuser was his only way out. He suddenly lunged toward Emma, his face contorted in a snarl, and violently shoved her aside to get to the doorway.

Vincent handed Leo to a trusted bodyguard in the blink of an eye. He stepped forward, caught Dominic by the arm mid-lunge, twisted him entirely around, and forcefully hurled him backward. Dominic flew through the air, crashing brutally into an empty, heavy mahogany reception chair.

Every single bodyguard in the room immediately drew their weapons, forming a tight, inescapable circle around the fallen capo.

No dialogue was spoken. The silence was absolute.
