Chapter 10

The bright screen of the burner phone illuminated Vincent’s face, casting a harsh glow over his cold, piercing eyes. The cinematic lighting of the ruined foyer behind him served as a violent, undeniable backdrop to his victory.
"Vincent Moretti," Don Lupertazzi breathed, recovering from his initial shock. The rival boss leaned back in his leather chair, a dark, calculating sneer spreading across his face. "I see my hit squad failed to clean house."
"Your hit squad," Vincent replied slowly, the controlled pauses in his speech dripping with absolute, lethal menace, "is currently fertilizing my front lawn. And your puppet, Dominic, has given me the locations of every single weapon cache you smuggled into my city."
Lupertazzi’s sneer faltered slightly, but he quickly masked his concern with arrogant bravado. "You think you've won because you survived one night, Vincent? You are weak. You let a housekeeper dictate family business. You coddle a weak heir. The Commission sees it. The other families see it. This was just the first wave."
"You made a catastrophic miscalculation, Lupertazzi," Vincent stated, his deep, raspy voice vibrating with an apocalyptic promise. "You believed that because I chose to rule with diplomacy, I had forgotten how to wage war. You targeted my son. You corrupted my blood."
Vincent took a slow step toward the shattered front doors, the cool night air blowing into the bright, warm estate.
"I am going to dismantle your empire," Vincent vowed, his voice dropping into a freezing, terrifying whisper. "I will burn your supply lines. I will slaughter your capos. I will not stop until the Lupertazzi name is completely erased from this country."
"Big words for a man sitting in a glass house," Lupertazzi laughed mockingly. "You survived tonight, Vincent. But you can't protect them forever. I have men everywhere. The next time that maid takes the boy to the park, the next time they step outside those gates..."
"They will never be in danger," Vincent interrupted smoothly. "Because by the time the sun rises on Chicago, you will be dead."
Lupertazzi scoffed, but a flicker of genuine unease crossed his eyes. "You're bluffing. My compound is impenetrable."
"Nothing is impenetrable," Vincent promised. He reached up with his thumb and abruptly ended the video call, cutting off the rival Don's arrogant laughter.
Vincent dropped the burner phone onto the marble floor and crushed it beneath the heel of his polished leather shoe, the plastic and glass shattering into tiny pieces.
"Marcus," Vincent called out, turning back to his second-in-command who had just re-entered the foyer.
"The courtyard is completely secure, Boss," Marcus reported. "No survivors, just as you ordered."
"Gather the strike teams. Refuel the jets," Vincent commanded, his deeply masculine, intimidating presence radiating a dark, unstoppable energy. "Leave a heavily armed detail here to protect the estate. We are flying to Chicago tonight. We end this war before it officially begins."
"Yes, Mr. Moretti," Marcus nodded, a fierce, loyal fire burning in his eyes as he rushed to mobilize the troops.
Vincent turned and walked purposefully up the grand staircase. The battle was won, but the war required his immediate, brutal attention. Yet, before he unleashed hell upon his enemies, he had one final, vital task to complete.
He walked down the third-floor hallway and stopped in front of the hidden panic room. He tapped the heavy steel door.
"Emma," Vincent called out, his voice instantly softening, losing its lethal edge. "It's Vincent. It is safe."
The heavy vault door hissed open. Emma stood there, holding a sleeping Leo securely in her arms. Her fair, rosy face was pale with exhaustion, but her bright eyes flooded with profound relief when she saw him standing there, unharmed.
"You're safe," Emma breathed, tears welling in her eyes.
"We are all safe," Vincent promised, stepping into the room and wrapping his strong, protective arms around both the woman who had saved his son and the boy who carried his legacy. The immediate threat was eliminated, but as Vincent held them close, his eyes looked over Emma's shoulder, staring into the middle distance. The king had defended his castle, but tomorrow, he would have to conquer the world to ensure they never lived in fear again.
The screen faded to black, the impending, bloody war with Chicago hanging heavily in the balance.
