Chapter 1

The grand reception hall of the Moretti estate was bathed in brilliant, cinematic light. There was not a trace of dull yellow in the illumination; instead, a crisp, natural brightness washed over the polished marble floors and towering crystal centerpieces. The vibrant colors of the room—deep crimsons, pristine whites, and rich golds—seemed to amplify the power of the people standing within it. The guests, an elite gathering of white American adults draped in formal Mafia-family reception clothing, moved with calculated grace. Their fair, rosy skin glowed under the immaculate lighting as they sipped champagne and traded hushed, dangerous secrets.
At the center of this ecosystem stood Vincent Moretti. At fifty-two years old, he was the undisputed head of the family, projecting an aura that was powerful, deeply masculine, and effortlessly intimidating. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit that fit his broad shoulders perfectly, paired with a crisp dress shirt. A heavy family signet ring rested on his finger, catching the light alongside his luxury wristwatch. His polished leather shoes clicked with authority as he spoke in low, measured tones to a circle of his top capos.
"The shipments from the northern docks are delayed," Vincent said, his deep, slightly raspy voice cutting through the ambient noise of the party. "I want to know who authorized the detour."
"We're looking into it, Boss," one of the capos replied nervously, adjusting his tie. "It might just be a logistical error."
"There are no logistical errors in my family," Vincent warned, his cold, sharp eyes narrowing. "Find the leak."
A few yards away, near a sprawling table laden with expensive hors d'oeuvres, stood twenty-four-year-old Emma Cole. She was undeniably beautiful by American standards, her fair, rosy complexion highlighted by her neat, professional housekeeper uniform and crisp white apron. Despite her modest flats and attire, she carried herself with a quiet dignity. Her sole focus was the small, three-year-old boy holding onto the fabric of her apron.
Leo Moretti wore a formal child’s suit and tiny dress shoes, his fair skin flushed with the overwhelming heat and noise of the massive reception. He looked up at Emma with wide, exhausted eyes.
"Emma, it's too loud," Leo whispered, his American accent soft and trembling.
"I know, sweetie," Emma replied gently, crouching down to his level and brushing a stray lock of hair from his forehead. "Your father is almost finished with his meetings. Then we can go upstairs and read a story. Just stay close to me."
"Well, isn't this a touching domestic scene," a slurred, aggressive voice interrupted.
Emma stood up quickly as Dominic Moretti approached. At forty-two, Vincent’s cousin and senior Mafia capo was an imposing figure in his expensive tailored suit, but the smell of expensive whiskey rolling off him ruined the elegant facade. The family pin on his lapel gleamed sharply. His fair skin was flushed red, not with health, but with alcohol and deeply rooted rage.
"Mr. Moretti," Emma said, keeping her voice steady, though her heart hammered in her chest. She subtly stepped slightly in front of Leo. "Is there something you need?"
"What I need," Dominic sneered, his eyes darting down to the little boy hiding behind her apron, "is for the heir to this family to stop acting like a frightened little rabbit. He embarrasses the bloodline."
"He is three years old, sir," Emma replied firmly, her protective instincts overriding her fear of the dangerous capo.

Dominic’s eyes flashed with a sudden, violent fury. "You don't talk back to me, you glorified servant."
Before Emma could take a defensive step back, Dominic lunged. He grabbed Emma violently by the back of her uniform collar, his heavy, polished leather shoes digging into the marble. With a brutal shove, he slammed her hard against the edge of the heavy reception table. Silver platters clattered loudly, and crystal glasses shattered against the floor, drawing the immediate, shocked attention of everyone in the immediate vicinity.
