Chapter 6

The silence was profound, heavy, and suffocating. The bright, cinematic natural light offered no warmth to the terrified onlookers. The elite white American guests, the seasoned capos, and the heavily armed bodyguards stood paralyzed, their fair and rosy faces pale with shock. They were witnessing a violent, tectonic shift in the foundation of the Ventresca family.
Alessio slowly reached up and adjusted the cuffs of his dress shirt, the gold of his family signet ring flashing in the sunlight. He smoothed the lapels of his tailored dark suit. He had neutralized the immediate physical threats, but the dark, lingering question of their motives still hung heavily in the crisp Chicago air. Why had they been digging up his wife's memorial?
From the far edge of the stone terrace, movement caught his sharp, penetrating eyes.
Twelve-year-old Evelyn stepped forward. Her summer dress fluttered slightly in the breeze. Her fair, rosy cheeks were stained with tears, and her entire body trembled, but she moved with a sudden, desperate bravery. She looked at her mother lying in the dirt, then at the unconscious Marco, and finally at her terrifying uncle.
Evelyn did not speak. She simply raised her small, trembling hand.
She pointed a single finger past the ruined tables and the shattered ceramics, directing Alessio’s attention toward one very specific, untouched section of the garden.
Alessio’s gaze followed the young girl's pointing finger. He looked past the chaos, scanning the layout of the sprawling memorial grounds. The cinematic lighting cast sharp shadows over the earth. It was then that the horrific anomaly finally registered in his highly tactical, observant mind.
He noticed that every single flower bed in the center of the garden—dozens of massive stone planters and deep soil trenches—had been systematically, violently destroyed and uprooted. The earth was churned, the roots exposed, looking like a battlefield.
But there was one exception.
A narrow, inconspicuous strip of dark earth located directly beside the thick, reinforced brick wall of the greenhouse remained completely, suspiciously untouched. It was pristine. While Marco and Claudia had aggressively ordered the destruction of the main garden, they had deliberately avoided that one specific area. It wasn't an oversight; it was a calculated avoidance. They were looking for something, and they were terrified of digging in the wrong spot.
Alessio’s chest expanded as he took a slow, deep breath. The pieces of a massive, terrifying puzzle snapped together in his mind. This was never about remodeling the patio. This was an excavation.
He slowly turned his imposing, deeply masculine frame toward the wreckage where Claudia and Marco lay. His polished leather shoes crunched rhythmically over the shattered ceramic pots, the sound echoing ominously in the quiet garden. He stopped a few feet from his cousin, looking down at her with eyes that promised an eternity of suffering.

"Now tell me," Alessio demanded, his deep voice dropping into a quiet, lethal, and absolutely terrifying cadence. The controlled pauses made every word feel like a physical strike. "What’s buried on that land. That has you all so afraid."
Claudia’s fair face became genuinely, profoundly frightened. The arrogant sneer was entirely gone, replaced by the pale, sweaty mask of a woman staring directly into the abyss. She realized, with a sickening drop in her stomach, that the true nightmare had only just begun.
