Chapter 10

The cinematic lighting of the garden felt suddenly harsh and condemning as the sheer magnitude of the betrayal settled over the terrace. Alessio stood tall, holding the damning ledger in his tattooed hand. Marco and Claudia had orchestrated a masterstroke of treason. By stealing the cartel's shipment and burying it on Alessio's private estate, they ensured that when the cartel inevitably tracked the missing goods, they would slaughter Alessio and his entire family in retaliation. With Alessio dead, Marco and Claudia would step in, return the goods, and assume total control of the Chicago syndicate as the cartel's new, compliant puppets.
"It was a flawless plan," Alessio murmured, his voice dead calm, echoing with lethal certainty. "Except for one fatal error. You couldn't control your hatred for a four-year-old girl."
Claudia wept hysterically on the ground, pulling her knees to her chest. "They promised us the city, Alessio! You were too rigid! You refused to run narcotics! The cartel was going to kill you anyway! We just wanted to survive!"
"You wanted to rule," Alessio corrected smoothly, snapping the leather ledger shut. "And you were willing to sacrifice my daughter's life to do it."
He turned his cold, intimidating eyes toward the assembled capos. His men were furious, their hands gripping their weapons, waiting for the command to execute the traitors who had nearly brought an army of cartel assassins to their front door.
"Take them," Alessio ordered, his deep, masculine voice ringing with absolute, undeniable authority. "Put them in the soundproof holding cells beneath the wine cellar. Zip-tie them to the chairs. Do not give them food. Do not give them water. I will be down shortly to extract the names of every cartel contact they spoke to."
"With pleasure, Boss," Silas growled.
The bodyguards moved with brutal efficiency. They hauled the screaming, thrashing Claudia and the bleeding, defeated Marco off the stone terrace, dragging them away from the bright, cinematic light of the garden and into the dark depths of the estate.
Alessio watched them disappear. He then turned his attention to the terrified twelve-year-old girl still standing near the edge of the patio. Evelyn was crying silently, watching her mother being taken away to certain death.
Alessio walked slowly toward his niece. He stopped in front of her, his towering frame casting a long shadow. He reached out with his tattooed hand and gently wiped a tear from her rosy cheek.
"You are brave, Evelyn," Alessio said softly, his voice shifting to a tone of profound, protective respect. "You saved this family today. You will live in this house under my protection. No one will ever harm you."
"Thank you, Uncle Alessio," Evelyn whispered, hugging her arms tightly.
Alessio turned back to the massive, unearthed duffel bags sitting on his wife's ruined garden. The internal threat was neutralized, but the external war had just begun. The cartel would realize their shipment was missing. They would come looking for the money, the guns, and the ledger.
"Silas," Alessio commanded, his eyes narrowing into cold, lethal slits.
"Yes, Boss," the capo responded instantly.

"Load the bags into the armored transports," Alessio ordered, slipping the ledger into his tailored suit jacket. "Lock down the estate. Arm every soldier we have. If the cartel wants their property back, they are going to have to come through me."
Alessio stood amidst the ruined flowers, his deeply masculine presence radiating absolute power. The memorial garden had been destroyed, but the foundation of his empire had just been reinforced with steel. The war was coming to Chicago, and the veteran Mafia boss was ready to bathe the streets in blood to protect his daughter. The screen faded to black, the violent promise of tomorrow hanging heavily in the air.
