Chapter 2

The horrific sounds of Ruby’s desperate struggle shattered the polite, ambient noise of the garden party. The bright, cinematic lighting of the afternoon suddenly felt stark and cruel, illuminating the violent assault with terrifying clarity. Guests froze, their champagne glasses halted midway to their lips, staring in absolute, paralyzed shock at the woman drowning a four-year-old girl in the shallow water. Yet, no one dared to intervene; the internal politics of the Ventresca family were lethal, and stepping between Claudia and the Don's daughter without authorization was a guaranteed death sentence.
"Mom, stop it! You're hurting her!" Evelyn screamed, her young voice tearing through the paralysis of the crowd. The twelve-year-old took a terrified step forward, her flats slipping on the stone terrace, but Marco’s heavy hand clamped down on her shoulder, holding her back.
"Stay out of adult business, Evelyn," Marco ordered coldly, his polished leather shoes planted firmly on the pathway.
The heavy glass doors of the adjoining greenhouse suddenly burst open, the sound echoing like a gunshot across the terrace. Alessio Ventresca stepped out into the blinding sunlight. At fifty-one years old, the veteran Mafia boss radiated a deeply masculine, overwhelmingly intimidating power. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit that fit his broad shoulders flawlessly, a heavy signet ring gleaming on his hand. His fair, rosy skin paled instantly as his cold, piercing eyes locked onto the reflecting pond.
"Ruby!" Alessio roared, a sound torn from the very depths of his chest.
He moved with explosive, terrifying speed. The polished leather of his shoes scrambled for traction against the stone as he crossed the terrace in three massive strides. He reached the edge of the water and instantly tore Claudia away from his daughter. He didn't just push her; he threw her backward with the sheer, crushing strength of a desperate, furious father.
Claudia stumbled wildly, her elegant garden-party outfit twisting around her legs, gasping in shock as Alessio’s massive hands released her.
Alessio plunged his arms into the freezing water of the reflecting pond and pulled Ruby out. The little girl gasped hungrily for air, coughing and sputtering violently as water streamed from her fair face and soaked cardigan. Alessio pulled her securely against his broad chest, wrapping his tailored suit jacket around her shivering frame, burying his face in her wet hair.
"I've got you. Daddy is right here," Alessio murmured, his deep, raspy voice trembling with a terrifying mixture of profound relief and apocalyptic rage. "Breathe, my sweet girl. Just breathe."
Ruby coughed up water, her small hands clinging desperately to the lapels of his expensive dress shirt. She looked over her father’s broad shoulder, her tear-filled blue eyes scanning the terrace. As her vision cleared, the true devastation of the afternoon came into focus.
"Daddy," Ruby sobbed, her voice breaking into a devastating, heartbroken hiccup as she pointed a small, trembling finger past the pond. "Daddy… But those are Mom’s favorite flowers."

Alessio slowly turned his head, following her gaze. Behind where Claudia had been standing, several large stone flower beds—the ones his late wife had painstakingly planted and nurtured—were completely ruined. The rich, dark soil was violently overturned, the delicate blooms ripped out by their roots and trampled into the mud. It wasn't just a casual trampling; it was a deliberate, systematic excavation of the earth.
"Who did this?" Alessio whispered. The volume of his voice dropped to a dead, lethal calm, sending a visible shiver down the spines of the heavily armed capos standing nearby. "Who tore up my wife's garden?"
