Chapter 14

Claudia lost the house she kept calling hers.

Not because I threw her into the snow.

I wanted no mirror-image punishment.

The deed had always remained inside a Whitaker trust controlled by me.

She had lived there through Mark.

That access ended.

She called it theft.

It was not.

It was the end of a privilege she confused with ownership.

Mark moved out too.

His choice.

Good.

The house needed to stop being Ethan’s map of fear.

Anna did not move back in.

Also good.

She chose a smaller home near mine.

Ethan spent his first night there with new slippers beside the bed.

He refused to take them off.

Anna laughed.

Then cried after he slept.

“He thinks shoes keep him safe.”

I sat beside her.

“For now.”
