Chapter 12

Claudia’s money scheme was smaller than her manipulation.

That surprised me.

She had siphoned enough to pay relatives, staff favors, private travel.

Not enough to build an empire.

She did not need one.

Influence was cheaper.

A gift here.

A favor there.

A staff member who believed her version first.

A husband who felt respected when she agreed with him.

A father kept distant because his son wanted independence.

She built power from interpretation.

Who was angry.

Who was weak.

Who was dramatic.

Who belonged.

Then she positioned herself as the person who explained everyone to everyone else.

I looked at her across my study.

“You made yourself translator for this family.”

She smiled faintly.

“Someone had to.”

“No.”

I shook my head.

“You made sure nobody spoke directly.”

Her face hardened.

That was the wound.

Direct conversation destroyed her.

Anna to me.

Ethan to Anna.

Mark to me.

Truth traveled too fast once Claudia was removed from the middle.

“You think this family survives without me?” she asked.

“Yes.”

May you like

I answered immediately.

That frightened her more than anger.
