Chapter 13

Mark wanted forgiveness.

Of course.

People who finally understand the damage they caused often want forgiveness before the victim has finished understanding it.

Anna said no.

He looked at me.

Old habit.

Seeking backup.

I gave none.

“She’s my wife.”

Anna corrected him.

“I was.”

Silence.

Not a legal statement.

An emotional one.

Enough.

Mark swallowed.

“I never wanted Ethan hurt.”

I stared.

“You left him outside.”

His face collapsed.

“Claudia said—”

“No.”

Anna’s voice cut through.

Good.

“No more Claudia.”

Mark looked at her.

“You knew he was outside.”

Silence.

“You heard him crying.”

Nothing.

“And you stayed inside.”

Mark started crying.

Anna did not move.

Sometimes tears arrive in the wrong person first.

She looked at him for a long time.

Then said:

“Whatever Claudia made easier, you still chose it.”

That sentence became the center of everything.
