Chapter 11

We brought Anna home that afternoon.
Not to Mark’s house.
Mine.
Her choice.
Ethan ran before the car fully stopped.
I caught him by the coat before he slipped on the snow.
Then Anna stepped out.
For one second, neither moved.
Eleven months is forever when you are three.
Ethan stared.
Anna crouched.
“Hi, baby.”
His face crumpled.
Then he ran into her.
I looked away.
Some reunions should not belong to witnesses.
Mark stood at the top of the steps.
Anna saw him eventually.
Her whole body changed.
Not hatred.
Fear first.
That mattered.
Mark noticed.
He did not approach.
Good.
At least he learned one thing.
Later, Anna told me the truth about the lake house.
Mark never struck her.
But he blocked doors.
Took keys.
Raised his voice until she stopped arguing.
Claudia did worse.
Threats.
Control.
Promises that Ethan would remain Whitaker if Anna left.
Anna believed her because Claudia always spoke as though she represented me.
Again.
My name everywhere.
I asked the question I had been avoiding.
“Why didn’t you call me?”
Anna looked at me.
“Because Claudia knew how you talk about loyalty.”
That hurt.
“She said you’d tell me marriage problems stay inside marriage.”
I closed my eyes.
I had said similar things in other contexts.
Not abuse.
Not fear.
But language travels.
May you like
People weaponize principles once powerful men stop defining their limits.
That part belonged to me.
