Chapter 7

The heavy doors clicked shut, plunging the vast, luminous dining hall into a profound, ringing silence. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light over the abandoned gold-rimmed porcelain and half-empty wine glasses. The opulent space, designed for celebration, now felt empty and hollow.
Hugo stood silently for a moment, his broad shoulders rising and falling with a slow, controlled breath. The betrayal was absolute, the upcoming syndicate war with Anastasia’s father inevitable, but the immediate, toxic presence within his home had been surgically removed.
He turned his attention away from the doors and looked back at the two people who mattered most.
Clara was kneeling on the thick patterned rug, holding Benjamin tightly in her arms. The sophisticated black maid dress contrasted sharply with the boy’s formal dinner jacket. Benjamin had buried his face in the crook of Clara’s neck, his small body trembling from the shouting and the sudden violence of Anastasia’s removal. Clara was gently stroking his hair, her softly tapered face etched with deep, maternal concern.
Hugo walked toward them, the heavy tread of his polished leather shoes muffled by the luxurious rug. He stopped beside them, dropping smoothly to one knee. His imposing, masculine frame cast a protective shadow over the housemaid and his son.
"Are you unharmed, Benjamin?" Hugo asked, his deep voice softening significantly, losing its lethal, interrogative edge.
Benjamin turned his head, his fair, rosy cheeks stained with fresh tears and soot from the fireplace. He looked at his father, his eyes searching for reassurance. "I'm sorry, Daddy. I didn't want her to be mad. I just wanted my bear."
"Would wanting the memory of your mother ever be considered a crime in this house?" Hugo asked, reaching out to gently cup his son’s cheek.
Benjamin sniffled, leaning into his father's large, tattooed hand. "No."
"Are you a brave boy?" Hugo asked, his thumb brushing away a soot-stained tear.
"Yes, Daddy," Benjamin nodded, his small chin trembling.
Hugo shifted his gaze to Clara. The beautiful housemaid was watching him, her expressive brows drawn together in quiet empathy. She had risked her job, her safety, and her life by reaching into a burning fireplace to save a child's toy against the orders of a mafia boss's fiancée. The loyalty she had displayed was a rare, precious commodity in Hugo's dark, violent world.
"Are you in pain, Clara?" Hugo asked, his cold, perceptive eyes scanning her delicate features before dropping to her right hand.
The clean white linen cloth was wrapped tightly around her palm, but a faint, angry redness was beginning to blossom near the edges of the fabric.
"It only stings a little, Mr. Caldwell," Clara answered softly, her elegant posture unwavering even as she knelt on the floor. "I am perfectly fine."
"Will you allow my physician to examine that burn immediately?" Hugo asked, his tone conveying a deep, unspoken gratitude mixed with command.
"Of course, sir," Clara nodded, gently helping the boy to his feet.
"Will you take Benjamin up to the nursery and stay with him until the doctor arrives?" Hugo asked, holding her gaze with an intensity that sent a sudden, warm flutter through Clara’s chest.
May you like
"Yes, Mr. Caldwell," Clara replied, her rosy cheeks flushing slightly under his intense focus.
Hugo stood up, watching as the beautiful housemaid took his son's hand and led him out of the luminous dining room. The impending war with the Price syndicate loomed over him, but for the first time in two years, his house finally felt like a home again.
