Chapter 5

The heavy doors clicked shut, plunging the vast, luminous dining hall into a profound, ringing silence. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light over the abandoned gold-rimmed porcelain and half-empty wine glasses. The opulent space, designed for celebration, now felt like a gilded cage.

Anastasia backed away from the head table, her heels clicking unsteadily against the polished marble floor. She wrapped her arms around her waist, a defensive posture that crushed the sculpted satin of her expensive gown. Her diamond earrings shook as she wept, her carefully constructed facade entirely destroyed.

"Hugo, you cannot believe this is worth ending us," Anastasia sobbed, her chest heaving. "My family arranged this marriage! We are supposed to unite our syndicates! Are you going to throw all of that away because of an old, ragged toy?"

Hugo stood immovably in his tailored dark three-piece suit. He slowly crouched down, bringing his handsome, angular face level with his son’s.

"May I see the bear, Benjamin?" Hugo asked gently, his deep voice softening to comfort the boy.

Benjamin sniffled, rubbing his nose with the back of his small hand. He looked at Clara, who gave him an encouraging, tearful nod, before looking back into his father's cold, but loving, eyes. The boy slowly extended his arms, offering the blackened, ruined toy to his father. The fur was singed and smelled strongly of ash and smoke.

Hugo took the bear with extraordinary gentleness, his tattooed hands cradling it as if it were made of fragile glass. He located the small, plastic button embedded in the bear's paw. He pressed it.

The silence stretched for a agonizing second. Then, a static-filled, distorted hiss emerged from the toy, followed by absolute silence. The heat of the fire had melted the internal wiring. The voice was gone forever.

Hugo closed his eyes. The sharply defined muscles in his jaw clenched tight. He stood back up, his towering, masculine frame radiating a dark, suffocating energy. He turned his broad, powerful shoulders toward his fiancée.

"Did you think I would not hear the silence?" Hugo asked.

"He was clutching it at the dinner table!" Anastasia shrieked, pointing viciously at the boy. "He embarrassed me in front of the governor! I had to discipline him! The maid tried to undermine me by pulling it out of the fire!"

Hugo didn't look at Clara. He kept his perceptive eyes locked entirely on Anastasia, dissecting her panic, reading the absolute guilt and cruelty written plainly across her flushed, rosy skin. He had survived in the criminal underworld by being an unparalleled judge of human character.

"Do you believe discipline requires psychological torture, Anastasia?" Hugo asked, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her.

"I love you, Hugo!" she wept, falling to her knees on the luxurious rug, the sculpted satin of her gown pooling around her. She clasped her hands together in a begging gesture. "Please, darling! My father will be furious if you break this off! I was only trying to make us a real family!"

"Does a real family require the destruction of an innocent child's heart?" Hugo asked.

His voice dropped to a terrifying, gravelly whisper. It was a sound that had preceded the end of many men's lives. Anastasia stared up at his movie-star handsome face, realizing with absolute, horrifying clarity that there was no escape. The mafia boss had heard enough, and the consequences would be paid in blood.
