Chapter 4

The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to bathe the room in their bright, airy light, but the charity dinner had fundamentally shattered. The guests remained paralyzed in their champagne velvet chairs, watching the confrontation unfold with breathless terror. They were seasoned politicians and syndicate lieutenants, but none of them dared to intervene in a dispute of this magnitude.

Anastasia’s fair, rosy skin lost its final trace of color, turning entirely translucent. She gripped the edge of the polished walnut table, her diamond engagement ring catching the light as her hand shook violently. She opened her mouth to speak, to scream a denial, to call the child a liar, but her vocal cords were paralyzed by the sheer, overwhelming terror radiating from the man standing before her.

Hugo did not explode into the violent rage for which he was feared throughout the criminal underworld. The stillness of his muscular, masculine frame was infinitely more dangerous. He tilted his head a fraction of an inch, his thick, dark hair catching the golden glow of the chandeliers.

"Did you believe destroying her memory would make him love you?" Hugo asked.

His deep, low voice remained completely level. The measured pause between his words was a calculated instrument of psychological torture. He did not step toward her, but the sheer gravity of his presence pressed her against the wall.

"Hugo, darling, please," Anastasia finally gasped, her American accent pitching high and breathless with panic. "He was obsessing over it! He wouldn't even look at me! I am going to be his mother now! He has to learn to let go of the past!"

"Is a mother's voice something that should be burned to ashes?" Hugo inquired, his perceptive eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"She is dead, Hugo!" Anastasia cried, tears of sheer desperation welling in her eyes. "She has been dead for two years! I am here! I am the one standing beside you! You cannot let a ghost dictate how we raise this child!"

Clara’s hand instinctively reached out, her uninjured fingers brushing the back of Benjamin’s jacket in a fierce, maternal gesture of protection. She glared at the socialite, her softly tapered face hardening with quiet outrage. Benjamin shrank back slightly against his father’s leg, overwhelmed by the shouting, but Hugo’s solid, unmoving presence kept him anchored.

"Do you assume my son's grief is a weakness for you to exploit?" Hugo asked, his voice echoing off the ivory-paneled walls.

"No! Of course not!" Anastasia shrieked, looking frantically around the room at the seated guests, silently begging someone—anyone—to intervene. But the elite crowd sat immobilized, their fair faces pale with shock, utterly unwilling to cross the mafia boss.

Hugo slowly swept his gaze across the room, taking in the numerous guests sitting frozen at their white damask tables.

"Are your appetites satisfied for the evening?" Hugo asked the room at large.

It was phrased as a question, but the command hidden within it was unmistakable. Chairs scraped violently against the polished floors as the guests practically scrambled to their feet. There were no polite farewells, no lingering handshakes. Men in tailored suits and women in evening gowns fled the bright, elegant room with frantic urgency, eager to escape the blast radius of Hugo Caldwell’s wrath.

Within moments, the grand dining hall was entirely empty, save for the four figures standing near the fireplace. The heavy mahogany doors slammed shut, sealing the room and locking Anastasia inside with her greatest nightmare.
