Chapter 1

The cascading crystal chandeliers suspended from the vaulted ceiling cast a brilliantly warm, golden light across the grand dining hall of the Caldwell estate. It was a space designed to intimidate and awe, wrapped in ivory-paneled walls and anchored by a massive, ornate marble fireplace that crackled softly in the background. Gilded ceiling moldings caught the luminous illumination, reflecting an airy, elegant warmth over the fifty guests assembled below. They were the city’s elite—wealthy politicians, syndicate lieutenants, and socialites—all possessing fair, rosy skin and polished American accents. Tall ivory candles flickered gently inside heavy silver candelabras, their dancing reflections shimmering across polished walnut tables dressed in pristine white damask. Crystal stemware clinked against gold-rimmed porcelain, harmonizing with the low, sophisticated murmur of the crowded engagement dinner.

At the head of the room stood Hugo Caldwell. He was a mafia boss of terrifying repute, yet he possessed the movie-star-handsome features of a classical statue. His powerful, broad shoulders filled out a tailored dark three-piece suit to perfection. He had an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, with just a few loose strands falling carelessly over his fair forehead. Refined artistic tattoos graced his hands and fingers, utilizing generous negative space to remain elegant, while a small, intricate tattoo peeked from the collar of his crisp shirt.

Opposite him stood Anastasia Price, his fiancée. She was draped in a sculpted satin evening gown that clung perfectly to her slender frame. Diamond earrings flashed in the candlelight, matching the heavy engagement ring on her finger. She offered a warm, composed, and reassuring smile to the passing guests, masking the treacherous, venomous cruelty that simmered just beneath her beautiful, rosy surface.

Moving gracefully near the edge of the dining area was Clara Wren. The twenty-seven-year-old housemaid possessed a beauty that easily rivaled any woman in the room. She had a softly tapered face, expressive brows, delicate cheekbones, and hair pinned into a neat, loose side bun. Her fair skin caught the warm light beautifully. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a slim-fitted silhouette, and a short A-line skirt. A neatly tied white apron, white collar, and matching cuffs completed her immaculate uniform.

Clara stepped forward, her slender, graceful proportions moving with careful, muted precision. In her left hand, she carried a crystal glass of iced water. Her right hand was awkwardly tucked against her apron, tightly wrapped in a clean, white linen cloth. Standing exceptionally close to her was six-year-old Benjamin Caldwell, Hugo’s son. Dressed impeccably in a formal dinner jacket, white shirt, and polished dress shoes, the boy stayed pressed against the housemaid's side, trembling violently.

Clara leaned down, setting the glass of water before Benjamin with her uninjured hand. The little boy did not reach for it. He kept his arms wrapped tightly around a severely scorched teddy bear, pressing the blackened, ruined toy desperately against his chest. Fresh tears rested heavily on his fair, rosy cheeks.

Anastasia, noticing the quiet exchange, paused her conversation with a nearby senator. She looked directly at Hugo across the polished walnut table. Her lips curved upward, and she gave a small, dismissive smile that did not reach her eyes.

"It’s only an old toy," Anastasia said, her American accent dripping with condescending lightness. "He has dozens of others in his playroom. There is absolutely no need for all these theatrics."
