Chapter 4

The heavy doors clicked shut, plunging the vast, luminous dining hall into a profound, ringing silence. The cascading crystal chandeliers continued to cast their warm golden light over the abandoned fine porcelain and half-empty crystal wine glasses. The opulent space, designed for celebration, now felt like a gilded interrogation chamber.
Celia backed away from the head table, her heels clicking unsteadily against the polished walnut floor. She wrapped her arms around her waist, a defensive posture that crushed the sculpted satin of her expensive gown. Her diamond earrings shook as she wept, her carefully constructed public smile entirely destroyed.
"Dorian, you cannot believe this is worth ending our evening over," Celia sobbed, her chest heaving. "My family arranged this marriage! We are supposed to unite our syndicates! Are you going to throw all of that away because of a piece of plastic and a lying maid?"
"Are you prepared to return what you stole, or must I have my men search your quarters by force?" Dorian asked, taking a slow, deliberate step toward her. His polished leather shoes clicked ominously against the floor.
Celia flinched violently at the threat. She knew the stories of what Dorian Hartwell did to those who defied him within his syndicate. She reached into the small, beaded clutch resting on the table and pulled out the tiny, state-of-the-art hearing aid.
"I have it right here!" Celia choked out, holding the device out with shaking fingers. "I was going to give it back to her after the dinner! It was just a lesson in humility!"
"Does humility require the stripping of a woman's basic senses?" Dorian asked quietly.
He didn't wait for her to answer. He reached out with his artistic, tattooed hands and snatched the delicate device from her fingers. He turned his broad, powerful shoulders away from the socialite and walked back to Maren.
Maren was watching him closely, her expressive eyes wide with a mixture of fear and profound gratitude. Dorian stopped directly in front of her, his towering, masculine frame casting a protective shadow over her slender figure.
"May I?" Dorian asked, holding the hearing aid up and gesturing to her ear.
Maren nodded, her rosy cheeks flushing a deep, beautiful pink. She reached up and gently swept a loose strand of hair behind her ear, exposing the side of her softly oval face.
Dorian leaned in close. The scent of his expensive cologne—a dark, masculine blend of cedar and spice—washed over her. His tattooed fingers were incredibly gentle as he carefully fitted the small device behind her ear and pressed the tiny activation button.
A soft chime sounded in Maren's ear, followed by the sudden, overwhelming rush of ambient noise. She could hear the crackle of the marble fireplace, the rustle of Celia's satin gown, and the deep, steady breathing of the mafia boss standing just inches away.
"Can you hear my voice now, Maren?" Dorian asked, his tone softening significantly, losing its lethal, interrogative edge.
Maren looked up into his cold, observant eyes, finding a surprising depth of warmth hidden beneath their icy surface. A radiant, beautiful smile broke across her face.
May you like
"Yes, Mr. Hartwell. I can hear you," Maren whispered, her voice musical and clear.
"Did you truly believe I would allow anyone to plunge you back into the dark?" Dorian asked, his thumb gently brushing against her delicate cheekbone, a fleeting, electric touch that promised absolute protection.
