Chapter 2

The bright, airy warmth of the dining room suddenly felt suffocating. The golden light cascading from the crystal chandeliers illuminated the profound, terrifying silence that had enveloped the fifty elite guests. Maren finished placing the silver pitcher onto the walnut table, completely oblivious to the dozens of eyes fixed upon her. Her fair, rosy skin was flawless, her expression gentle and serene, wholly unaware of the tension radiating from the mafia boss seated just inches away.

Dorian did not raise his voice. He did not explode into the violent rage for which he was feared throughout the underworld. Instead, his cold, observant eyes studied the housemaid's delicate profile. He knew about her significant hearing loss; he had personally paid for the discreet, state-of-the-art hearing aid that usually rested behind her ear. The fact that she was entirely unresponsive meant something was terribly wrong.

Moving with a slow, deliberate grace, Dorian gently raised an open, heavily tattooed hand directly into Maren’s line of sight.

The sudden movement caught her attention. Maren gasped softly, her expressive eyes fluttering up. She looked directly at Dorian, her softly oval face pale with sudden realization. She quickly faced him directly, her graceful posture rigid with anxiety as she prepared to read his lips.

"Can you hear me, Maren?" Dorian asked slowly and naturally, making sure the shape of his words was perfectly clear for her to read.

Before Maren could answer, Celia shifted in her champagne velvet chair. She leaned forward, meeting Dorian’s cold, intimidating eyes with a faint, reassuring smile. Her sculpted satin gown rustled softly in the dead silent room.

"Why are you indulging her?" Celia asked, before catching herself and dropping her voice into a tone of smooth, dismissive certainty. "Maren’s ignoring you, darling."

After speaking the cruel lie, Celia shifted her gaze. She shot Maren a brief, venomous warning glance—a silent, terrifying command promising severe retribution if the housemaid dared to contradict her.

Maren’s breath hitched in her throat. She watched the shape of Celia's lips, understanding the accusation perfectly. She looked back at Dorian's handsome, angular face. Her delicate fingers trembled as she reached up, touching the empty space behind her ear where her device should have been. Her lips trembled slightly, her vulnerable expression drawing Dorian’s intense, protective attention.

"Celia took my hearing aid," Maren said, her voice soft, musical, and devastatingly clear in the silent room.

Celia’s reassuring smile vanished instantly, tightening into a brittle, defensive line. She looked directly at Dorian, her fair skin flushing with restrained impatience.

"A maid doesn’t need luxuries," Celia snapped, her American accent dripping with condescending superiority. "I merely confiscated an extravagant toy she didn't deserve."

Dorian rose slowly from his chair, placing his broad, powerful shoulders deliberately beside Maren at the edge of the frame. He looked briefly at Maren, his cold eyes softening with quiet, unmistakable reassurance. Then, he slowly turned his head toward Celia. His sharply defined jaw tightened slightly; his gaze became entirely cold and unwavering. He held the stare, freezing the socialite in a silence that promised absolute destruction.
