Chapter 10

The subterranean bunker was brightly lit, stocked with emergency supplies, tactical monitors, and comfortable cots. The heavy steel doors sealed shut behind them with a resounding, metallic clack, completely cutting off the noise of the dying skirmish above.

Dorian set his customized automatic weapon down on a metal table. He turned to face Maren, his movie-star handsome face illuminated by the harsh, clinical light of the safe room.

"Are you prepared for the reality of this life, Maren?" Dorian asked quietly, stepping into her personal space. "The world outside these walls is dangerous. My enemies are dead today, but there will always be others."

Maren stood tall in her dusty black maid dress. She looked up into Dorian’s cold, perceptive eyes, her heart hammering against her ribs, but her spirit completely unbroken.

"Are you asking if I am afraid to stand beside you?" Maren asked, answering his question with one of her own, a spark of defiant courage in her expressive eyes.

"I am asking if you understand that once you step fully into my life, there is no stepping back," Dorian stated, his deep voice a low, mesmerizing whisper.

Maren held his gaze. She had seen the monster he could be to his enemies, but she had also seen the man who would walk through fire to protect the people he cared about.

"Do you believe I would ever want to step back, Dorian?" Maren asked softly.

"Shall we face whatever comes next together?" Dorian asked.

He leaned down, his lips meeting hers in a profound, searing kiss—a promise sealed in the bright, luminous safety of the bunker. The engagement dinner had ended in a broken alliance, but the true war for the city had only just begun. Arthur Ward thought he was attacking a man who had broken an engagement; he was about to discover he had awakened a monster protecting his true partner.

The morning sun eventually broke over the estate with a quiet, luminous brilliance, pushing through the smoke and destruction of the night before. The heavy steel doors unsealed with a metallic hiss, and Dorian led Maren back up into the grand foyer.

The chaos of the previous night was already being meticulously scrubbed away by his loyal staff. The shattered crystal and broken porcelain were being cleared, the damaged walnut paneling covered, and the ivory walls wiped clean. The mansion was returning to its state of elegant warmth, though an undeniable tension still lingered in the air.

Dorian stood in the center of the foyer, his tailored dark suit brushed clean of dust. He was a king standing in his restored castle.

"Is the Ward syndicate dismantled?" Dorian asked his underboss, who had just entered through the ruined front doors.

"Yes, Boss," the operative reported grimly. "Celia's father is dead. His lieutenants have surrendered and pledged loyalty to you. The territory is ours."

"And Celia?" Dorian asked, his voice a low, vibrating rumble.

"She was arrested attempting to flee the state. She won't see the outside of a cell for decades."

"Will you ensure our legal team provides the prosecutors with every piece of evidence we possess?" Dorian asked.

"Consider it done, Mr. Hartwell."

The operative exited, leaving Dorian alone with Maren in the bright, golden morning light. The war had been swift, devastating, and absolute.

"Are you ready to see what the future holds for us, Maren?" Dorian asked, offering his heavily tattooed hand to her.

"I am ready," Maren smiled, placing her hand firmly in his as they walked forward into the luminous, airy dawn of their new empire.
