Chapter 1

The grand dining hall of Dorian Hartwell’s mansion was a breathtaking vision of bright, airy elegance, bathed in luminous video colors with a soft, elegant warmth. Cascading crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring ceiling, illuminating the intricate gilded moldings and the pristine ivory-paneled walls. The lighting was remarkably clear, casting gentle golden highlights across the carved marble fireplace and the polished walnut furniture. There was no heavy yellow cast or muddy orange tint to the room; the whites were clean and pure, providing sufficient illumination that clearly revealed the entire opulent space. Tall ivory candles glowed softly in heavy silver candelabras, perfectly interspersed among lush arrangements of white roses, crystal stemware, and fine porcelain plates. Champagne velvet chairs surrounded the long dining tables, where the city’s most dangerous and influential figures sat, their fair, rosy skin glowing under the warm light as crisp American accents filled the air.

At the head table sat Dorian Hartwell, the undisputed boss of the mafia syndicate. He was movie-star handsome, radiating a deeply masculine presence with his broad, powerful shoulders. He possessed an angular face, a high-bridged nose, and a sharply defined jawline that was accentuated by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally swept back, though a few loose strands fell carelessly over his forehead, giving him a charming, romantic edge. He wore a tailored dark three-piece suit, a heavy family signet ring, and a polished wristwatch. Artistic tattoos with refined, sharp designs and generous negative space marked his hands and fingers, while a small, artistic tattoo peeked just above his crisp white collar.

Beside Dorian’s left shoulder sat his fiancée, Celia Ward. She was twenty-nine, draped in a sculpted satin gown that clung perfectly to her figure. Diamond earrings flashed against her rosy complexion, matching the heavy engagement ring on her finger. She offered a carefully rehearsed, charming smile to the guests, masking the cold cruelty that lay beneath her sophisticated exterior.

Moving gracefully near Dorian’s right shoulder was Maren Ellis. The twenty-five-year-old housemaid was beautiful, gentle, and delicate, with a softly oval face, expressive eyes, and hair gathered into a loose, low bun. She wore a sophisticated black maid dress with a cinched waist, a short A-line skirt, a neatly tied white apron, and a crisp white collar and cuffs. A white ruffled maid headband rested flawlessly in her hair. She maintained a graceful posture as she leaned forward, carefully pouring iced water into Dorian’s crystal glass. Her eyes were lowered, entirely focused on the task.

The dining room was filled with the lively chatter of the engagement banquet, but a sudden, heavy silence fell over the head table. Dorian, whose cold, sharp, and intimidating eyes missed absolutely nothing, turned his head slightly toward the housemaid.

"Is the water pitcher empty, Maren?" Dorian asked, his deep, measured voice slicing clearly through the ambient noise of the room.

Maren did not react. She continued pouring the water, her gaze fixed entirely on the crystal glass. She didn't flinch, didn't pause, and didn't acknowledge the mafia boss who had just spoken directly to her.

"Are you unable to hear my voice?" Dorian asked, his volume remaining low and controlled.

Every guest at the surrounding tables immediately stopped eating and speaking, turning their heads toward Dorian. The sudden, deafening silence in the luminous room was palpable. Maren, completely unaware of the sudden quiet, finished pouring the water and began placing the heavy silver pitcher down onto the polished walnut table.
