Chapter 4

The sheer, overwhelming volume of Damian’s furious roar silenced the screaming guests. The bright, cinematic lighting of the gala illuminated the absolute devastation surrounding the base of the collapsed pyramid. The floor was a chaotic sea of shattered crystal, reflecting the bright colors of the room in thousands of jagged, dangerous shards.

"I said... get away from her!" Damian commanded, his voice dropping from a roar into a lethal, terrifying growl. He closed the distance in three massive strides, his hands curled into tight fists. The artistic tattoos on his fingers flexed as he prepared to physically rip the maid away from his child.

Elena Brooks remained curled in a tight, protective ball on the floor among the shattered glasses. Her fair, rosy skin was pale, her professional maid uniform dusted with fine glass powder. She did not move to defend herself against the Mafia Boss. She kept one arm wrapped securely over Lily’s head, absorbing the pain of the sharp fragments digging into her own shoulders.

Before Damian could lay a hand on the young woman, a tiny, frantic movement erupted from beneath the maid's apron.

Lily crawled safely from beneath Elena’s protective embrace. The little girl’s elegant gala dress was completely untouched by the glass, her face entirely free of scratches. She scrambled across the dangerous floor and immediately lunged upward, her small, trembling hands grabbing the fabric of Damian’s tailored suit jacket.

"Daddy! Stop!" Lily screamed, her high-pitched American accent cracking with desperate, panicked tears.

Damian froze instantly. His towering, masculine frame halted just inches away from the kneeling maid. He looked down at his daughter, his cold, intimidating eyes scanning her fair, rosy face for any sign of injury. Finding none, his chest heaved with a massive, shuddering breath of relief.

"Are you hurt, Lily?" Damian asked, his volume dropping low, the controlled pauses returning to his speech as he gently touched her hair. "Did she... push you?"

Elena remained on the floor, wincing as she slowly shifted her weight. She kept herself positioned between the child and the largest piles of broken glass, her breathing ragged. "I... I just tried to cover her, sir," Elena whispered, her voice shaking.

"No, Daddy!" Lily cried, pointing a small, accusatory finger over Elena's shoulder, directly across the room. Her tears flowed freely down her flushed cheeks. "She saved me—THAT MAN PUSHED IT!"

Damian’s entire body went absolutely rigid.

The charming, slightly romantic aesthetic of the loose hair falling over his forehead was starkly juxtaposed against the apocalyptic, murderous intent that instantly flooded his sharp, intimidating eyes. The misunderstanding evaporated in a fraction of a second, replaced by a cold, calculating clarity.

"Who?" Damian whispered. It was barely a sound, yet it carried a lethal, terrifying weight that made every guest within hearing distance hold their breath.

"Him!" Lily sobbed, pointing her tiny finger toward the mirrored display panels. "The man in the dark suit! He pushed the glass on me!"

Damian slowly raised his head. His gaze tracked the trajectory of his daughter's trembling finger. Through the bright, natural light of the boutique, past the shattered crystal and the horrified guests, Damian’s eyes locked dead onto the fair, panicked face of Grant Mercer.
