Chapter 3

The towering pyramid of crystal glasses stood as a masterpiece of catering architecture, sparkling brilliantly under the neutral white balance of the cinematic lighting. Hundreds of delicate, expensive champagne flutes were stacked meticulously, reflecting the bright video colors of the surrounding designer-shoe displays and mirrored display panels.
Behind the kneeling form of the weeping three-year-old, forty-two-year-old Grant Mercer stepped out from the shadows of a mirrored column. As the senior family security man, Grant wore a tailored dark suit, his lapel adorned with a shiny security pin. A heavy luxury wristwatch peeked out from beneath the cuffs of his crisp shirt, fastened by solid gold cufflinks. His fair, rosy skin was pulled taut over a hard, uncompromising face.
Grant’s cold, American accent muttered under his breath as he looked down at Lily. He didn't see a child; he saw an opportunity that had been paid for in blood money.
Elena, having endured Celeste’s verbal abuse, had kept her sharp eyes fixed on Lily. As she watched the little girl gather her shoes, the maid noticed Grant’s approach. The movement was entirely wrong. A security man should have been scanning the crowd, not deliberately maneuvering his body weight toward a fragile, massive structure.
"What is he doing?" Elena whispered to herself, her heart suddenly hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs.
Grant deliberately planted his polished leather shoes on the marble. He looked around to ensure the other bodyguards were distracted by Celeste’s loud scene. Then, with terrifying, calculated precision, Grant drove one heavy, open hand directly into the foundational base of the massive crystal pyramid.
The sound of grinding, shifting glass cut through the polite murmurs of the gala.
The entire towering structure destabilized instantly. The thousands of pounds of fragile crystal began to tilt, groaning ominously as the center of gravity shifted. The entire deadly avalanche of heavy glass tilted directly toward the kneeling, oblivious child.
"Lily, watch out!" Elena screamed, her voice tearing through the room with sheer, unadulterated terror.
Elena didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second. She sprinted across the polished marble, her flats skidding wildly. She threw her entire body forward in a desperate, flying dive. She crashed onto the floor, throwing herself completely over Lily’s small, fragile frame, shielding the child entirely with her own body just as the structure gave way.
The explosion was deafening.
Hundreds of crystal glasses collapsed around them, shattering and exploding across the floor in a roaring, catastrophic cascade. The sound was like a bomb detonating in the middle of the luxury boutique. Shards of razor-sharp glass flew through the bright, cinematic air, raining down upon Elena’s back and shoulders. The maid absorbed the brutal, crushing impact of the heavy base glasses, burying Lily’s face into her apron to protect the little girl's eyes.
Screams erupted from the white American guests. Women in expensive gowns dove for cover as the shockwave of shattered crystal spread across the marble.
On the far side of the room, Damian Bellucci heard the deafening crash. He spun around, the charming, romantic look vanishing instantly from his face. He rushed through the panicking crowd, his polished leather shoes crushing broken glass. As he broke through the perimeter of the crowd, his cold, sharp eyes widened in horror.

He saw his three-year-old daughter trapped beneath the collapsed ruins of the pyramid, and kneeling directly on top of her was the estate maid.
"Get off my daughter!" Damian roared, his deep voice shaking the very walls of the hall, entirely misunderstanding the chaotic, bloody scene before him.
