Chapter 1

The private luxury boutique gala hosted by the Bellucci family was bathed in brilliant, natural cinematic lighting. High above, massive skylights and perfectly calibrated white studio lights flooded the expansive hall, ensuring absolutely no yellow tint marred the pristine atmosphere. The vivid, bright video colors of the room—emerald draperies, polished silver fixtures, and the dazzling reflections of a massive pyramid of crystal glasses—created a breathtaking spectacle of extreme wealth. The guests, all white American adults dressed in impeccable formalwear, mingled with easy confidence. Their fair, rosy skin glowed with health and privilege under the neutral white balance of the room, and the air hummed with the smooth, crisp sounds of American accents.

At the center of the room’s gravity stood Damian Bellucci. At thirty-two years old, the head of the Bellucci family was handsome as a movie star, radiating a deeply masculine, distinctly Mafia Boss-like authority. His thick, slightly wavy hair was naturally slicked back, but a few loose strands fell effortlessly over his forehead, giving his angular face a charming, almost romantic look. This softer edge was starkly contrasted by his high-bridged nose, a sharply defined jawline shadowed by extremely short, neatly trimmed stubble, and his cold, sharp, intimidating eyes.

"The shipments from the western ports cleared customs an hour ago," one of his capos reported, his American accent low and respectful.

Damian took a sip from his crystal glass. He wore a flawlessly tailored suit, the shirt beneath it daringly unbuttoned at the chest to reveal a glimpse of his fair, rosy skin. When he gripped his glass, the bright light caught the artistic tattoos on his hands and fingers—refined, sharp designs with enough negative space so they did not look too dense.

"Ensure the harbor master... receives his bonus," Damian replied. He spoke slowly, with controlled pauses between his words, keeping his volume dangerously low. Every sentence he uttered sounded measured, cold, and calculated. "We do not... tolerate delays. Not this week."

"Understood, Boss," the capo replied immediately. "We have men stationed at every loading dock. The perimeter here is equally secure. Grant Mercer is running the interior detail tonight."

Damian’s gaze swept the room, resting briefly on the twenty-three-year-old estate maid, Elena Brooks. Elena possessed a fair, rosy complexion that flushed slightly as she worked. She wore a crisp, professional maid uniform with a starched apron, thick tights, and sensible flats. She was currently arranging a display of designer handbags, her movements quiet and efficient.

"Keep your eyes open," Damian instructed his men, his voice a lethal whisper. "The smiles in this room... are purchased. Trust none of them."

A few yards away, stepping out from the opulent coat check, was three-year-old Lily Bellucci. Damian’s daughter looked like a porcelain doll in her elegant child’s gala dress and a soft, knitted cardigan. Her fair skin and bright eyes were stunning, but her feet were clad in noticeably worn, scuffed flats. In her small, delicate hands, she clutched a standard cardboard shoebox containing a forty-five-dollar pair of new school shoes. She had insisted on carrying them herself, immensely proud of her new possession.

"Look, Elena!" Lily called out, her sweet, high-pitched American accent carrying over the polite murmurs of the crowd. She trotted toward the maid. "I got my new shoes for school!"

Elena paused her work, offering the little girl a warm, genuine smile. "They are beautiful, Lily. You must be so excited to wear them tomorrow."

"I am!" Lily beamed, hugging the cardboard box to her chest. "Daddy said I could hold them all night!"

"Well, you hold onto them tight," Elena said kindly.

But the tender moment was immediately overshadowed by the arrival of a suffocating, toxic presence. Celeste Bellucci, Damian’s forty-year-old older cousin, stepped into the bright, cinematic light. She wore a luxurious, sweeping evening gown that clung to her figure, her fair skin adorned with heavy diamond jewelry and sparkling rings. She looked down at the three-year-old child with a gaze of unadulterated disgust.
