Chapter 8

The transition from the opulent, massive dining hall to the quiet, secure residential wing of the mansion was a journey through changing light. The bright, airy luminosity of the lower floors gave way to a softer, more intimate golden warmth in the private corridors. Ivory-paneled walls lined with classical art passed in a blur as Iris followed a few steps behind the Mafia boss.

Malcolm carried Lucy with effortless grace, his polished leather shoes making rhythmic, muffled sounds against the thick runner rug. Iris watched the broad, powerful expanse of his shoulders, her heart still racing from the adrenaline of the confrontation. She had fully expected to be fired, cast out into the street for defying the future bride. Instead, she was walking deeper into the inner sanctum of the Thorne syndicate.

They reached the doors of Lucy’s expansive bedroom. The room was decorated in soft pinks and creams, filled with toys and books. Malcolm gently set the little girl down on the edge of her plush, canopy bed.

"Will you help her change into her nightgown, Iris?" Malcolm asked, stepping back toward the doorway to offer them privacy.

"Yes, sir," Iris replied, her American accent soft and steady.

She moved with elegant, polished efficiency, helping the exhausted six-year-old out of her party dress and into a soft cotton nightgown. Lucy was unusually quiet, the emotional toll of the evening finally catching up to her. Once she was tucked beneath the heavy down comforter, Malcolm stepped back into the room.

He sat on the edge of the mattress, leaning over to kiss his daughter's forehead.

"Will you sleep soundly tonight, knowing that no one will ever touch that photograph again?" Malcolm asked softly.

"Yes, Daddy," Lucy whispered, her eyes already drooping shut. "I like Iris. Can she stay?"

Malcolm’s perceptive eyes shifted toward the housemaid standing quietly by the wardrobe. "Do you think I would ever let her leave after what she did tonight?"

Lucy smiled sleepily, her breathing evening out within moments.

Malcolm stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow in the dim room. He gestured toward the hallway, and Iris followed him out, pulling the heavy door almost completely shut behind them.

They stood alone in the quiet, warmly lit corridor. The silence stretched between them, heavy with unspoken tension and the profound shift in their dynamic.

"Are you aware of the danger you placed yourself in tonight, Iris?" Malcolm finally asked. His voice was deep, low, and incredibly intimate in the empty hall.

Iris looked up into his cold, observant eyes, refusing to shrink back. "I am, Mr. Thorne. But I couldn't let her erase her mother. It would have broken her heart."

"Does it surprise you to learn that bravery is the rarest commodity in my world?" Malcolm inquired, taking a slow, deliberate step closer to her.

Iris’s softly tapered face flushed a delicate, rosy pink under his intense gaze. She could smell the expensive, masculine scent of his cologne. "I only did what I thought was right, sir."
