Chapter 6

The silence that followed Malcolm’s question was absolute. The soft elegant warmth of the dining hall felt like a suffocating blanket. The tall ivory candles flickered, casting dancing, erratic shadows against the ivory-paneled walls.
Camille realized she was drowning. Her attempt to erase the late wife had not solidified her power; it had entirely obliterated it. She looked at the dozens of powerful white American men and women seated at the long tables. They were her peers, her family's allies, but not a single one moved to defend her. In the world of the syndicate, a boss's child was untouchable, and Camille had blatantly crossed that sacred line.
"You are embarrassing me, Malcolm," Camille whispered, genuine tears of frustration and humiliation finally welling in her eyes. "My father will not tolerate this insult."
"Will your father truly care for an insult when he learns his daughter attempted to manipulate my heir?" Malcolm asked smoothly.
He didn't wait for her to formulate another hollow defense. Malcolm turned his head slightly, his gaze sweeping over the long, crowded dining tables. The refined tattoos on his neck shifted as he addressed the entirety of the syndicate.
"Have we not celebrated enough for one evening?" Malcolm inquired, his voice carrying effortlessly to the back of the room.
The question was rhetorical, a polite but absolute command to vacate the premises. The guests immediately understood the dismissal. Chairs scraped softly against the polished marble floors as the elite of the underworld rose in unison. There were no murmurs of protest, no prolonged goodbyes. The men and women simply nodded respectfully toward the fireplace and began a swift, organized exodus toward the grand foyer.
Within minutes, the sprawling, luminous dining hall was virtually empty, save for the immediate participants of the confrontation and a few of Malcolm’s heavily armed, silent bodyguards standing near the velvet drapes.
Camille watched her audience abandon her, the diamond engagement ring feeling suddenly heavy and cold on her finger. She turned back to Malcolm, her sculpted satin gown rustling angrily.
"You have ruined everything over a photograph and a weeping servant," Camille spat, her true, venomous nature finally breaking through the elegant facade. "Do you think you can easily replace the alliance my family brings? You need the western ports, Malcolm."
"Do you believe I require a port badly enough to harbor a snake in my own home?" Malcolm asked.
He stepped closer to her, his towering frame casting a shadow over her fair features.
"Are you going to pack your belongings, Camille, or must I have my men do it for you?" Malcolm questioned, delivering the final, unmistakable blow to their engagement.
May you like
Camille gasped, the reality of her dismissal striking her like a physical force. "You can't be serious. You are breaking the engagement?"
"Is there any ring on this earth heavy enough to chain me to a woman who breaks my daughter's heart?" Malcolm asked.
