Chapter 5

Lucy’s lower lip quivered, and a single tear spilled over her rosy cheek, but she nodded slowly, comforted by the heavy, reassuring weight of her father's tattooed hand. Iris, standing just inches away, let out a shaky, silent breath. She kept her position, her sophisticated black maid dress blending into the shadows cast by Malcolm’s broad shoulders.

Malcolm slowly straightened to his full height. He kept Lucy close to his side, his left arm acting as a physical barrier. He subtly adjusted his stance, deliberately keeping Iris tucked safely behind his right shoulder. It was a commanding, protective maneuver that communicated absolute ownership and defense of the two vulnerable figures.

Keeping them shielded, Malcolm slowly turned his cold, perceptive gaze toward Camille.

The brief flash of paternal tenderness was gone, replaced by the lethal, calculating stare of an executioner. The warm golden light of the cascading chandeliers seemed to dim in the face of his localized fury.

“What else needs to disappear?”

His voice stayed impossibly low. There was a terrifying, cold pause deliberately placed before the word "disappear," letting the threat hang heavy in the luminous, airy room.

Camille held his gaze, but her practiced confidence was rapidly unraveling. The rigid, reassuring smile faded entirely from her face. She drew a shallow, panicked breath, the sculpted satin of her gown rising and falling rapidly. Her mind raced, searching for an excuse, a pivot, a graceful exit from the corner she had painted herself into. But under the crushing weight of his unyielding stare, she found no immediate answer.

"Malcolm, darling, you are completely misunderstanding my intentions," Camille finally stammered, her voice lacking its previous smooth persuasion. "I was only thinking of the psychological well-being of the household. We cannot live in a mausoleum."

"Is a house a mausoleum simply because it honors the woman who gave me my child?" Malcolm asked, taking a slow, deliberate step toward his fiancée.

"It makes the syndicate view us as stuck in the past!" Camille argued, her tone pitching higher, bordering on hysterical as she glanced at the silent guests. "We are supposed to be projecting strength and unity tonight! How can we do that with her ghost staring down at us?"

"Do you believe strength is demonstrated by terrorizing a six-year-old girl and threatening a housemaid?" Malcolm inquired, his deep voice echoing across the polished walnut tables.

Iris remained perfectly still beside Lucy, her heart pounding as she watched the most powerful man in the city systematically dismantle his future bride. Every guest in the room watched Malcolm, completely paralyzed by the unfolding drama.

"I am your fiancée!" Camille cried, her fair, rosy cheeks flushing an angry crimson. "I demand respect in this house!"

"Can respect be demanded by a woman who possesses none for the blood of this family?" Malcolm asked softly.
